    Mark Twain
    Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Yale university in 1901. He was the first political humorist. He was considered to be a progressivist. He was a member of the Anti-Imperialist League. Many of his writings expressed the ideas and problems of America. He often wrote about politics, religion, and race. He wrote more than than ten books in this time period.
  • Jane Addams

    Jane Addams
    She won worldwide recognition in the first third of the twentieth century as a pioneer social worker in America, as a feminist and as an internationalist. She co-founded one of the first settlements in the US. She also complied her talks on ending war in the world in 'Never Ideals of Peace.' She became the first female president of the national conference of charities and connections. In 1915 she attended the international congress of women at The Hague. She won the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Henry Ford

    Henry Ford
    Ford created the Ford model T car in 1908 and went on to develop the assembly line made of production which revolutionized the industry. He sold millions of cars and became the world famous company head, having a lasting effect. In 1914 he sponsored the development of the many assembly line technique of mass production, at the same time he introduced the US-per-day wages.

    Abraham Lincoln's Assasination
    John Wilkes Booth- the assasin-was an actor and confederate sympathizer. The assassination was only 5 days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union. March 20, 1885 was the planned day to kidnap and take Mr. Lincoln to Richmond. That plan failed and when Richmond fell to the union, Booth and other plotters panicked to save the union which led to the assassination. President Lincoln was pronounced dead on the 15th.

    I chose this event because it was a pivotal point in the reconstruction era. From this point on Andrew Johnson took over office and made some decisions that affected reconstruction.

    Klu Klux Klan Begins
    It was mainly composed of confederate veterans. It was formed to intimidate blacks and other minorities. It was also considered a terrorist group. It first met in Pulaski Tennessee. It was the first of many secret terrorist groups formed in the south during this time. The purpose of this was to reestablish white authority. I chose this event because the establishment of this was a big deal during the reconstruction era.

    New Orleans Race Riot part 1
    It took place outside of the mechanics institute in New Orleans as black and whites attended a constitutional convention.This was right after the black codes were passed which prohibited blacks from voting. Black New Orleans residents marched to the flag behind the mechanics institute to stop the delegates from meeting. Ex mayor John Monroe led a group of ex confederates, white supremacists, and New Orleans police force to block the way of the institute so the delegates couldn't meet.

    New Orleans Race Riot part 2
    130 delegates marched their way and shots were fired. Once they reached the institute the whites and police attacked the delegates and most of them ran into the building for safety. Delegates who surrendered(mostly blacks) were mostly killed on the spot.The killing spread over many blocks. Black victims were pulled off of their streetcars and beaten to death.Overall 238 were killed and 40 were wounded. I chose this because it was an example of racial tension during this time period.

    This was the first time black men were able to vote in the district. Also, John F. Cook was named part of the Republic party. This event disturbed many people against black rights. I chose this because it shows a big stepping stone in the journey to racial equality.

    I chose this event because this affected the decisions towards reconstruction very much. If Andrew Johnson were still president we may not be the country we are today.

    The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
    He was the first president to be impeached.The congress was against johnsons reconstruction plan and passed the tenure of office act which prohibited him from removing officials approved by the senate unless approved by the senate. Johnson tested the act's constitutionality and tried to replace Stanton with Grant.Johnson tried to rid Stanton of office once and for all. He appointed general Lorenzo Thomas-unlinked by the senate as secretary of war. The senate decided to formalize his impeachment.
  • Harry Houdini

    Harry Houdini
    He was born in Budapest, Hungary. He was a son of a Jewish rabbi. He launched his career in 1894 as a professional magician and renamed himself Harry Houdini. He continued his act in the US in the early 1900's, constantly upping his acts from anywhere to getting out of handcuffs,straight jacket, water-filled tanks and nailed packing crates. He also escaped a cell filling up wtih water which reqired him to hold his breath for 3 minutes.
  • Pablo Picasso

    Pablo Picasso
    Pablo Picasso was a very skillful writer who did a lot of work in the progressive era. All though he suffered from severe depression which he incorporated into many of his works during "They Blue Period" he overcame it and carried on his artwork. During this era, he also entered into his Rose period which lasted from 1904-1906. He Created many works and devoted himself to art production.
