They went to find the 7 citys of Cibola, Esteban was killed by the Zunis for demanding their wemon, and fray Marcos reported seeing a city of gold. -

Coronado's Expadition
Coronado was searching for the cibola city that fray Marcos told of, and latter Quivera after hearing of it from the Turk who died after his lie was revealed. The only thing of importance Coronado found was Palo Duro canyon in texas and the Grand canyon in Arizona
