Intro to Salamano and doggo <3
Meursault's very monotone and simple explanation of Salamano and his dog provide further insight into his apathy even towards topics which usually draw some type of emotion. His very detailed description of both the dog and Salamano also show how he often pays most attention to the physical characteristics of people and things.

Meursault tells Salamano to go look for doggo at the pound

Meursault tells Salamano to go look for doggo at the pound
When Meursault takes the time to help Salamano out by telling him to check the pound for his dog, he comforts and reassures him that his dog will be there. According to Meursault's absurdist ways, he usually couldn't care less about the problems of others. The way Meursault takes the time to deal with Salamano's problem shows that Meursault may not be as coldhearted as previously assumed.

Meursault doesn't think that Salamano and doggo are pitiful!

Meursault doesn't think that Salamano and doggo are pitiful!
When asked by Raymond if he thinks that Salamano and his dog are pitiful, Meusault says "no". Though this seems insignificant, it's clear that Meursault lacks sympathy and maybe even morals which would cause people to usually believe that the situation is in fact pathetic and sad. It can also be inferred that Meursault is not phased by physical violence or abuse (also made evident by his view on Raymond and his punishment of his mistress and him later shooting the Arab).
  • Salamano tells Meursault that doggo is not in the pound

Salamano tells Meursault that doggo is not in the pound
When this happens, Meursault eventually gets annoyed with the fact that Salamano is constantly nagging about where the dog could be if he isn't in the pound, while previously, he had been very helpful in the hopes of finding the dog. This shows that he has began to hook back up with his existentialist ways and is fed up with the fact that Salamano is continuously coming to his for consoling despite the fact that it's not Meursault's problem and there's no reason he should help the poor man out.
  • Salamano cries and Mersault thinks about his mother

Salamano cries and Mersault thinks about his mother
When Mersault hears Salamano crying through the walls, his mind immediately moving to the thought of his mother shows us that he is able to have human emotions similar to those we might feel upon the death of our mother. However, the fact that it is only for a short moment and he immediately moves on and seems confused about what happened shows that he is not mature enough to acknowledge his emotions and perhaps this is the first time he actually felt a feeling so strongly.
  • Meursault reflects <3

    Meursault reflects <3
At the end of the book, Meursault reflects on the fact that he believes that the dog of Salamano was equally as important as his wife, showing that he thinks that people should place value in things with only their ideas in mind.
