Birth Date and Early Life
Moritz was born in Berlin, Germany to a wealthy home. It was at the age of 16 that he began reading into philosophical journals and papers and creating, in his mind, the future he wanted to achieve. -
Founder of the Vienna Circle (1924-1936)
The Vienna Circle was a founded in 1924 and it was “ a group of early twentieth-century philosophers who sought to reconceptualize empiricism by means of their interpretation of then recent advances in the physical and formal sciences” (Uebel, 2006). Moritz was the chair of the circle. These men would meet and discuss or try to disprove the newest, hottest topic in science or mathematics. These gentlemen were the reason that metaphysics was referred to as “cognitively empty and meaningless”. -
Foundation of Knowledge
Mortiz Schlick contributed greatly to this work. He had his ideas of logical postivism. This simply meant that only statements verifiable through direct observation or logical proof are meaningful. http://www.hist-analytic.com/SchlickFoundations.pdf -
Death by Assasination
Professor Schlick was on his way to a lesson when one of his former students, Johann Nelböck took his life. There is no known reason behind this assassination other than the student had been making threats to his life for years. He shot him 4 times total ending his life. Nelböck had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was in and out of mental institutes. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but only did 2 before receiving parole. He then joined the Austrian Nazi Part. -
