Marius' father,
Marius' grandfather tells him to go to Vernon to see his father. Marius arrives seconds after his father dies, and he is not very upset about his death. Marius discovers a note from his father that says to help Thénardier in any way he can. Marius is in the church when he discovers that his father had been visiting mass regularly, and that it was really the grandfather that had been keeping them apart. After a fight with his grandfather, Marius leaves. -
First Appearence
We first meet Marius in the novel when he is a young adult. -
Marius see's Cosette
Marius often takes walks in a garden, and he always passes Cosette and Jean Valjean. He slowly falls in love with Cosette. He finds a handkercheif with the letter U on it, and so he calls Cosette, Ursula. He refers to Jean Valjean as M. Leblanc. Marius follows them home and asks the doorman about them. When Jean Valjean learns of this, he and Cosette move out. -
Marius meets Éponine
Éponine visits Marius at his apartment. She gives him a letter and begs for money. Éponine proves she is literate by writing "the police are here" on a slip of paper. -
The Jondrettes
Marius' spies on his neighbors, the Jondrette's through a crack in the wall. He see's Jean Valjean and Cosette over there and then he later hears the Jondrette's talking about killing Jean Valjean. When Jean comes back, Marius learns that the Jondrettes are the Thénardiers and he is supposed to help them. He throws Éponine's note through the wall, and Jean Valjean escapes through the window when Javert and the police come through the door. -
The barricades
Marius thinks that Cosette is gone, so he goes into the barricades. During a battle, a young boy, who is really Eponine in disguise, saves Marius' life, but gets shot, As she dies, she gives Marius a letter from Cosette. Marius is leaving, and he must threaten the soldiers that he will blow up the barricade.
