    Girolamo Fracastroro

He was an italian poet and scholar in math and astronomy. He proposed that epidemic diseases are transfered by little tiny particles or spores in the air. He also created the name for syphilis in one of his poems.
  • Period: to

  • Period: to

    John Needham

John Needham did experiments on the theory of spontaneous generation. His experiments concluded that their was lifeforce that made organisms appear. But modern day studies show that the mixture was not hot enough, and that microorganism's from the air could have infected the beaker.

    Lazzaro Spallanzani

A italian catholic priest, and biologist, who made some important discoveries in the study in bodily fuctions, animal reproduction, and animal echolocation. He paved the way for the downfall of preformationism.

    Theodor Schwann

Was the a main contributor to the devolpement of modern day biology. He was the main creator of the cell theory, he discovered the Scwann cells, the discovery of pepsin, and the discovery of the organic nature of yeast.
  • Period: to

    Ignaz Semmelwis

Ignaz Semmelwis was a early pioneer in the use of anitseptic products. He is also described as the "savior of mothers". Semmelwis concluded that the use of hand disinfection would drastically cut the incidence of puerpal fever.

He was a french chemist who is known for his remarkable discoveries in the fields of pasteurization, and vaccination. He created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax. He is best known in the general pubilc for his skill in removing harmful bacteria from milk and wine, now know as pasteurization.

  • Period: to

    Friedrich Schroder

He made a flask that allowed air to enter only after passing through a heated or sterile tube, to kill microorganisms.
  • Period: to

    Robert Koch

Robert Koch was considered the founder of modern bacteriology. He is also known for finding causative agents of tuberculosis, anthrax, and cholera. He is also known for creating Koch's Four Postulate.
    • The microorganism must be found in all organisms suffering from the disease. -The organism must be isolated from the diseased organism, and grown in a pure culture -The organism must cause the disease when introduced to a healthy organism -They organism must be reisolated and must be identical
  • Period: to

    Charles Chamberland

Charles Chamberland was a french microbiologist. In 1884 he developed the chamberland filter, which is used to seperate bacteria from a solution.
