    Ka'ahumanu as Prime Minister

    Ka'ahumanu was the kuhina nui of the Hawaiian islands as well as the favorite wife of Kamehameha the Great himself. She became prime minister by donning Kamehameha's cape and seeing Liholiho. She put on his cape to get his attention and told him that Kamehameha wanted her to be the prime minister although there is no proof of this. Throughout her reign the islands were prosperous because of the political power she wielded. When she died the islands fell into a time of poverty caused by poor rule
  • Naha Stone Overturned

    Naha Stone Overturned
    King Kamehameha is trained and taught by many people to increase his strentgh to overturn the Naha Stone.When he is ready he orders a meeting with the other chiefs and the Naha Stone is overturned in front of the chiefs, signaling that Kamehamha will be the chief to unite the Hawaiian island chain.
  • Captain Cook Lands on Kauai

    Captain Cook Lands on Kauai
    Captain Cook arrived in Kauai and he was welcomed because his ships sails resembled the symbol of Lono, a Hawaiian god. They picked up supplies from the islands and went. But just as he went a storm hit and he was forced to turn back. When he came back he was greeted with rocks because he took most of their food and he was killed in battle. Very little of his crew survived.

    When the English didn't arrive in Hawaii the population was 500,000 native hawaiians. The islands were prospering.
  • The Puukohola Heiau was built

    The Puukohola Heiau was built
    The Puukohola Heiau was built because one of Kamehameha's kahuna told him that if it were built it he would conquer the islands.This was built with thousands of people and was finally finished. It's purpose to Kamehameha though was to help secure his mana and power. He then called his brother Keoua Kuahu'ula for a peace conference but was killed by one of Kamehameha's warriors.

    No one knows how the British found this out but they figured out that they emmited a pleasant smell so everytime the British came to port they always took sandalwood. Kamehameha saw the opportunity and made the sandalwood a royal monopoly. To protect young trees he placed kapu on them.
  • Fair American Captured

    Fair American Captured
    The Fair American was captured by the Hawaiians. They were overpowered because the crew was very inexperienced and everyone was killed except for Isaac Davis. He then over time became Kamehameha's friend and advisor. Many English allies were made like this. John Young, Kamehameha's military advisor was captured and was spared unlike his unlucky crew of the Eleanora. Soon George Vancouver came and became another British advisor to Kamehameha.

    Battle of Nu’uanu
    Finally Kamehameha had conquered all of the islands except for Oahu. He had landed on Kalanikupule's Oahu and had attacked with his cannons. Eventually the Oahuans were driven to a cliff and were pushed off by Kamehameha's forces. Any family of the warriors was killed. After about 150 years after the battle a farmer found hundreds of skulls at the cliffs base.

    Kamehameha Attacks Kauai
    Kamehameha sailed to Kauai but his fleet of 1200 war canoes was hit with a series of storms. When he had finally arrived on Kauai his forces were now halfed. So he called the ali'i of Kauai King Kaumualii for a peace conference. So in the end King Kaumualii and Kamehameha agreed for King Kaumualii to still rule Kauai and Niihau, but under his rule. Finally, Kamehameha had united the Hawaiian islands.

    Kamehameha's Reign

    This was the time where Kamehamehameha ruled the Hawaiian islands. He had united the Hawaiian islands and uder his rule they enjoyed years of prosperity. He had also made connections with the foriegners and he then exposed his people to other tools and luxuries.

    Hawaiian Unification
    After years of conquest he had finally united all of the islands and had them under his rule. The ali'i of Kauai was allowed to rule his island until he died. When he was ruling he had formed a strong bond with the foriegners and eventually became his cohorts. They traded with the foriegners and the Hawaiian islands propsered. When he died he was celebrated and even had a day named after him.

    Liholiho or Kamehameha the Second came to rule afy e his defer Kamehameha the Great died. In just 6 months after his death Liholiho had destroyed kapu and the worship of the gods. Ka'ahumanu had to grind and scrape away his defenses put eventually convinced him.

    The end of kapu happened on LihoLiho's of Kamehameha the II reign. It started with Ka'ahumanu's anger with the kapu and it's unfairness towards women so in order to wield the power in order to lead a revolt she donned Kamehemeha's cloak and spear and faced Liholiho. She explained that nothing happened to her and that Kamehameha wanted her to be a prime minister (there is no proof). She then threw a feast and invited him to eat with her which was against the kapu. She did this several times to

    The End of Kapu Part II
    and LihoLiho of course refused. But he sat down and ate with them and by doing this the kapu was broken. When the commoners looked at the opposite sexes dining and was amazed that nothing happened and rejoiced. Liholiho then oredered all the images of the gods and the heiau burned. This all happened 6 months after Kamehameha's death.

    The missonaries came and offered ther religon to replace the old kapu and the Hawaiians accepted. Within a few years the new generation of Hawaiians accepted Chrstianity as a part of thier everyday life.

    It was the sandalwood trade's peak but the English now introduced new kinds of dieases that left the Hawaiians vulnerable. The population has now dropped to 125,000.

    The first recorded plantation on Hawaii was the sugar mill on Koloa. It's first shipment was 8000 pounds of sugar cane and molasses to the United States.

    The Great Mahele was an event were the Hawaiians were kicked off thier homes. The foreigners believed in owning land and the government put the land on sale for those who could buy them. The Hawaiians who previously lived on the island had to pay for someone to verify if they owned the land or not. This was a tactic the government used to rake in more money for the economy.

    The spread of diesease continues and the population drops to 70,000.

    In the end the disease had taken 80% of the Hawaiian population.There was only 30,000 native Hawaiians left.

    Whaling Economy

    Whaling was a new industry at the time. Whaling was very dangerous but had a lot of payoff and sailors took the risk. The whales were hunted for thier whale oil for lanterns. Eventually people found petroleum and it was less dangerous. Eventually whalling became obselete.
