Birth
On April 14th, 1907 a an by the name of Francois Duvalier was born. He was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Most people also knew him by the name of papa doc. This is because of his interest in medicine and trying to cure diseases. He also had 1 son who earned the nickname of baby doc. -
1934
In 1934 Papa doc earned his degree in medicine at the University of Haiti. After he got his degree he became a staff physician in many hospitals. He also studied public health at the University of Michigan. -
1939
Francois goes on to marry a women by the name of Simone Ovide Fain. Simone had the job of being a nurse. Simone and Francois went on to have four children. 3 girls named Marie-Denise, Simone, Nicole and 1 son named Jean-Claude. Who became the new president when Francois died. -
1956
The president at the time was Dumarsais Estimé and then he was overthrown by a man named General Magloire. This meant that Duvalier was forced into hiding. After Magloire had left Haiti that December, Duvalier emerged from hiding. -
1957
On October 22nd, 1957 Francois gained power of Haiti. This is the second time he has been elected. This happened because he didn’t want his term to end. So, he cheated the system by making an unlimited term. Which lead him to more violent behavior. -
1959
In the year of 1959, Francois Duvalier had a heart attack. A man by the name of Barbot acted in his place while Duvalier recovered. After Duvalier had recovered, he then imprisoned Barbot. That Summer he killed Barbot. -

1950 through 1960
Francois Duvalier started an undercover organization called the Tontons Macoutes, or also known as Bogeymen. The Bogeymen were meant to be responsible for Francois. They went around terrorizing and assassinating any one who opposes to him being the president. -
1961
Francois Duvalier’s term as president was going to end in 1963. Francois Duvalier did not want his term to end so soon, so the year of 1961 he changed the constitution. He changed the constation where he could stay president until 1967, he later changed it again to extend until he died. He then gave himself the nickname of ‘President for life.’ -
1970
The year before his death Francois started to have health problems. Francois started to have some heart problems and diabetes. He had also caught a few other diseases. -
Death
On April 21th, 1971 Francois Duvalier died in the presidential palace. He served as a president for Haiti, for 14 years. He stayed in power up until the moment of his death. His son then took over and was nicknamed baby doc. The cause of his death was complications with diabetes and heart problems.
