Erik erikson portrait

Erikson's (Psychosocial Theory) Timeline

  • Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt

Brandon (age 2) was given the freedom to play with dolls and/or racecars. This gives him the ability to explore his environment to which he pleases.
In Erikson's second stage, Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt,
he is allowed some freedom to choose how to shape his own environment (autonomy) vs being restrained excessively (shame and doubt)
  • Identity vs Identity Confusion

Brandon realized that his musical abilities were exceptional, according to his friends and family. He decided to apply his skills and join the city ensemble.
In Erikson's fifth stage, identity vs identity confusion,
Brandon becomes aware of his abilities and what his role in his community should be (identity) vs becoming lost and unable to find his passions or skills (identity confusion)
  • Generativity vs Stagnation

Brandon felt as though he reached a peak in his career and musical abilities. As there was no more room to grow, he felt it would be useful to contribute to his old high school and help teach the younger generation.
In Erikson's seventh stage, generativity vs inferiority,
he felt as though he could best make use of his talent by contributing to the younger generation (generativity) vs focusing on his own needs (stagnation)
