Candide develops romantic feelings for Cunégonde
Candide meets Cunégonde at dinner and it is love at first sight. Cunégonde's father, the Baron, disapproves of the relationship and kicks Candide out. -

Candide is put in the Bulgar Army after impressing the king with his military skills. At their first war, however, he runs away and is stranded. -
Candide travels to Libson
Candide, Pangloss, and the Anabaptist travel to Lisbon for the Anabaptist's rug business. Their ship ends up shipwrecked and the Anabaptist dies. Once Pangloss and Candide land ashore, a huge earthquake hits and they are blamed. Pangloss is ordered to be hanged and Candide beaten. -
Candide and the old woman
Candide is beaten after the earthquake and he is severely injured when an old woman comes and helps him. The old woman helps Candide recover and tells him that Cunégonde is a servant. -
Candide finds Cunégonde
Candide finds Cunégonde and he kills her two owners. One of the owners was the one who ordered him to be beaten (the Inquisitor). -
Candide finds the Baron
After Candide finds Cunégonde, he runs into the Baron and tells him that he plans to marry Cunégonde. The Baron disapproves so Candide stabs him. -
Candide arrives in El Dorado
Candide and Cacambo arrive in El Dorado and they receive a new crew and riches out of the generosity of the king. They want to stay but Candide insists that they must find Cunégonde. -
Candide sends Cacambo away
After leaving El Dorado Candide sends Cacambo to Buenos Aires to retrieve Cunégonde from the Govenor and tells him to meet him in Venice -
Candide buys Martin
After sending Cacambo off, Candide buys Martin to be his new companion and accompany him on his journey to Venice. They are on their way to Venice when they run into an ongoing war and they decide to detour to France. -
Candide reunites with Cacambo
Candide and Martin are having dinner in Venice when they see Cacambo as a servant. Cacambo tells Candide that Cunégonde is a servant in Constantinople and they leave immediately to fetch her. -
Candide buys Cacambo's freedom
Once they arrive in Constantinople Candide buys out Cacmbo's freedom with the money he got in El Dorado. -
Candide finds Pangloss and the Baron
Candide is looking around in Constantinople for Cunégonde and he finds his old tutor Pangloss. He also sees the Baron whom he stabbed. They are both working in the galley. Candide purchases both their freedoms as well. -
Candide finds Cunégonde
Candide finally finds Cunégonde and she and the old woman are servants so he purchases both their freedoms. -
Candide wants to marry Cunégonde
Once Candide buys Cunégonde's freedom he says he wants to marry her. The Baron speaks his disapproval but Candide doesn't want to deal with him so he sends him back to the galley. -
Candide buys a farm
Candide buys a farm. He settles there with Cunégonde and all of their companions. -
Candide is inspired
Candide sees a Turkish farmer who is honest and works really hard and doesn't take any free time. He is inspired by this and tells his companions about it. -
The garden
After telling his companions about the Turkish farmer, Candide and the rest of the group decide to work really hard and make the best out of their farm and make a beautiful garden.
