Auguste Comte's Birth
Auguste Comete was born on the 19th of January of 1798. -
The Law of Three Stages
Within Comte's course he argued that society operated under its own set of laws. The Law of three stages comes from his course on positive philosophy. The three different ways society believes the world came to be. The first being the theological stage, where earth came from supernatural ways. The second stage is metaphyisical, where society was believed to come from natural but unproven ideas. Last, the third stage was the positive, where scientific techniques were actually used to prove ideas. -
The course on positive philosophy
Comte's created a course that had six volumes, the first three volumes focus on five fundamental sciences (math, astronomy, physics, chemistry, and biology), and the last three deal with social sciences. His course had two goals, one to create the foundation for sociology. Second, his goal was to organize positive knowledge. He introduced that physical science had to come first and then social science. This initial work helped to explain practical goals of sociology. -
System of Positive Polity
Another major work of Comte where he completed his configuration of sociology. The work emphasized how humans use ethics in society. Within this work he created his own religion called "The Religion of Humanity" where he put religion and science together. He believed himself to be the high priest of this religion. It was not separated from science but rather complemented it. -
The Subjective Synthesis
Comte was only able to complete one volume in this writing before his death. It focused on the philosophy of mathematics. His intentions were to review all seven sciences in this writing from a subjective view. -
