    The Big Four
    The big four are Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes. Aeschylus was born around 525 B.C. He wrote the play about the Persian war in 474 B.C. He wrote more than 80 plays. Sophocles played a leading role in plans about victory the Persians at Salamis Euripides was born around 485 B.C. Made 80 to 90 plays. Aristophanes lived around 445 B.C. to 380 B.C. In his plays he made fun of statesmen like Pericles, dramatist like Euripides and philosophers like Socrates.

    He was a skilled public speaker. He became a leader of the Athenian city-state. He was known for his hard work and dedication. He didn't believe in wasting time at parties and social events. Pericles led armies to victorious campaigns, helped keep Delian League members in line.

    It was an important battle because the Athenians won. They were filled with self-confidence. They thought they were the most powerful of all the Greeks. They planned a battle at Marathon about 26 miles from Athens. By the end of the battle 6000 Persians were dead and 192 Greeks had fallen.

    He asked questions about people's personal life. People got annoyed with him because he pointed out their faults and problems. He was arrested for corrupting young men of Athens. Accused of not teaching young men to respect elders and gods. Encouraging them to be selfish and power hungry. They blamed him for the down of Athens.

    The Parthenon was built 447-432 B.C. One of the greatest Greek Buildings, and treasures of human culture. Damaged by an explosion in the 1600's. It was built to honor the Athena but also as a symbol of wealth, power and prosperity of Athens. Pericles recruited three architects, Phidias, Ictinus, Callicrates to design the building.

    The people thought he was not wanted in Athens. Plato founded the Academy in 387 B.C. The school closed 900 years later because it didn't teach Christianity. He wanted people to know about Socrates.
