Wayne Woodrow Hayes, commonly know as "Woody" Hayes was a very interesting man who lived a very interesting life. He is most known for his time at The Ohio State University, but is also known for his infamous act that ended his carreer in a horrible way. He punched another player out of his own anger. Woody was widely known for his anger. -
Woody Hired at Ohio State
Woody applied for the vacant job at Ohio State in 1951. He was not a very highly rated coach coming out of the small school Miami of Ohio. He received an interview and went in there with full intentions of getting the job. He impressed the hiring comitte so much that he was offered the job shortly. within three years of Woody being there, he won a nationall champiuonship and a Rose Bowl(Davis). -
The Vote
IN the season of 1973, Ohio State and Michigan were both undefeated going into "The Game." Woody Hayes led the Buckeyes that season and When they played Michigan it was for all the marbles. Winner goes to the Rose Bowl and the loser stays home and watches on TV. When the game ended no one thought it would end like this. A tie. The coaches of the Big Ten made an anonymous vote of who would go and Ohio State would end up going and claiming a National Title(OHIO STATE FOOTBALL). -
The Day that will Live in Infamy
On December 29th, 1978, Woody Hayes led his team to the gator bowl against Clemson. It was the fourth quarter and The Buckeyes were driving down the field with two minutes left on the clock, and two points down. Art Schlichter stepped back in the pocket and fired a bullet through the middle of the field. The ball was intercepted by Charlie Bauman of Clemson. He ran up the Buckeye sideline before The Buckeyes brought him down, the, Woody got into the action by punching Charlie in the throat. -

Effectively ruining his career as a coach and his reputation as a man. Woody would never coach again in his life and would be fired the day after the game(Woody V Charlie). -
Date of Death
Woody Hayes died on the date of March 12th, 1987. He was buried then was joined by his wife, Anne Hayes 11 years later when she died in 1998. Woddy Hayes death came to no surpise as his health was failing. Anne found him in their bedroom one morning laying on their bed, dead from a heart attack(Woody Grave). Woodys death was a very sad day for all of Buckeye Nation. For he is the best coach we have ever had. He will go down in history as one of the greatest coaches of all time.
