1. The horse sale
A six months old colt just lost his mother and get sold in the market by a drunk man. He was struggling to escape from his owner and run after his mother. Six men needed to stop him, but they saw that the horse such a fighter. After a while he got tired and just walked with the man to his new home. -
2. Farmhorse
The owner had a farm and a son, Albert. He named the horse Joey and they grew up together, also with an another horse on the farm, Zoey. Albert's father was most of the time drunk, so Albert had to protect Joey from the drunk man's bothering. Joey grow up as a farm horse working on the fields. -
4. First war
Joey has got a rider called Captain Nicholls, and a friend. It was a beautiful black as special horse as Joey, Topthorn. Joey liked them and they gave him power during his first war and made him calm, not to be afraid. But unfortunately Captain Nicholls, who was really kind to Joey like Albert was, just dead in the war. -
3. Cavalry
The war was coming, and the farm needed the money, the cavalry bought horses in a good price, so Albert's father sold the horse, before Albert could stop him. After this, Albert tried to join the army, but he was way too young. But he promised to Joey that they will be together again and that he will find him one day. So in the cavalry Joey was trained as a war horse. Everybody saw that he is special and strong. -
5. Ambulance
Joey and Topthorn was surrended by kindness as they were the two best horses in the entire world. They had a job to pull the ambulance cart and take all the injured men to the hospital. There was their first time since they came to war that they had luxury of the stable. -
7. Artillery-pulling horses
One day a soldier came to the farm that he will take the horses, because they look strong and they needed more horses to pull the guns. Emilie and her grandfather had to say goodbye to the horses and give them to the man. The harsh and bitter times came back for the horses, but at least they were together. The job wasn't hard just they didn't have the protection anymore in the middle of a war. -
6. Farmhorse again
A little girl, Emily and her grandfather went to the stable door every day to visit the horses, and take care of them. The horses had to pull the cart every day on the same way and Emily led them up on the hill and wave, she gave them love. Emily just went through an illness, when a doctor told them that they don't need the horses anymore, and they can stay on the farm until the war comes back. Joey did what he born for, he was a farmhouse again, and Topthorn adapted easily as well. -
9. Veterinary hospital
Joey's wounded leg made it harder to look for escape. But when he reached the wire a man found him and took him to the veterinary hospital. Joey was covered by mud and blood, but a young man's job was to wash him, to make it easier for the doctor to examine him. -
11. Illness
The war seemed go away but in the hospital something was wrong. Joey has left the mash in his bucket and looked really weak. The doctor recognised tetanus. After a long discussion they decided that they can save him, with a lot of support and attention. Albert look after him every day in every minute, when they reached him to eat again and they take him back from death. Joey could only make it with Albert, who was talking to him all the time. -
8. No-man's-land
The horses met old Friedrich, who also led the horses up to the hill and support them. And he rode them when they went to war again. Walking up on the hill again, suddenly Topthorn just fall on his knees. Joey just had lost his dearest friend and everybody a great horse. The shells started to fall all around them, Friedrich started to run but only a few steps from Topthorn's body and Joey, he is dead. Joey had to move, he started to run forward when he found himself in no-man's-land alone. -
10. Owl whistle
The young man was Albert, and they washed Joey with his friend, David. David knew how Joey looks like because Albert was always talking about him. Albert couldn't believe to David when he said that the horse has four white socks and a white cross on his forehead just like Joey has. Albert wanted to make sure so he whistled how he did when they were on the farm together and Joey reacted for the whistle. After they spent all the time together like in the old days. -
14. Happy family
The old man made a deal with Alfred if he tells about Emilie how she cared about Joey and the other black horse, he wanted her to live in people's heart, he will sell the Joey to Alfred for only one English penny. In the end Joey and Alfred got home and got back to work with Zoey, who didn't seem older by the years. Alfred get married but Joey and the wife has never had a good relationship because of the mutual jealousy. -
12. The war came back
A bigger wave of the war just surprised them. Joey was still weak from the recovery. Now Alert was with him in the war like Topthorn before so Joey was never afraid of the sound of the guns and the shells. All the soldiers was talking about home. And that how it happened, right after the war has stopped and it was obvious that they can be at home for Christmas. -
13. Horse sale
But they meant the way of home without the horses. They had to sell them, but Albert couldn't stand that he would have to loose his friend again. All the soldiers helped Albert to collect enough money to buy Joey in the horse sale but an old man offered lot more than they had. The old man was Emilie's grandfather and he told Alfred that she cared about this horse very well but unfortunately she has dead. But the grandfather promised to bring him back to their farm.
