W. E. B. Du Bois

  • Birht and Birthplace

    W. E. B> Du Bois was born in 1868, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He attended Sunday school with African American and white children, and only learned that his skin color caused judjment upon him when he attended high school.He was called a "Bright student" and was highly encouraged to continue with his education.
  • Earned his Doctorate

    He was the first African-American to get a doctorate. Previously he had attended Fisk University, a school for African-American students. Then he studied history at Hardvard University in Germany.
  • Professor of History

    Two years after having earned his doctorate at Hardvard University, Du Bois was called foreard for a teaching job. He had been appointed professor of history and economics at a very large college.Atlanta University was a leading African-American college, and it was where he taught until 1910.
  • supporter of civil rights

    Throughout the early 1900s, Du Bois was a strong supporter of civil rights. He completely agreed with Booker T. Washinton, that the people discrimated against for their skin color, should not have to do so. He wanted justice for the African-Americans, the rights to go to better colleges that had been reserved for the other race, and urged many to go on with their education and reach for the stars.
  • Published Book

    Du Bois published his first book in 1903, "The Souls of Black Folk". He openly exspressed his passionate interest in Africa, the homeland of black people, and his identity as African and American.
