Montesquieu publishes book, On the Spirit of Laws
On the Spirit of Laws is about Britains system of the seperation of political powers. However, he oversimplified the British system. There was actually no seperation of powers, but his book greatly inspired America's government. -
America declares independence
The British kept restraining the rights of the colonists through laws such as the tax on imports, the Stamp Act, and the tax on tea. They accused Britain of taxation without representation. All of these laws and more led to the colonists to revolt against Britain. The revolution started, and then a little while later, they created the declaration of independace. Which is what officially declared their independance. -
French Revolution
The majority of the population (the 3rd estate) was very mad with the government. They were very poor, had little rights, and had to pay a ton of taxes. Inspired by the American revolution, they decided to revolt against the government. The revolution quickley got more and more intense, and some peole from the other estates help with the revolution. -
Napoleon overthrows the Directory through a coup d’etat
He was a very successful general, and a national hero. The current government was failing, so he decided to step in. He said that the people should vote him to be the leader (even though if they didn't vote him in he would have still been the leader of France) The french people overwhelmingly wanted him to be the ruler of France. -
Napoleon crowns himself emperor, begins to create a vast European Empire
He went to the pope, and essentially blackmailed him into crowning him. Most of the European Catholics were in France, and they all (for the most part) wanted Napolien to rule, so he told the pope that if he wasn't the leader all the French Catholics would convert. -
Haiti wins freedom from France
Hati was the first Latain American Colony to free itself from European rule. There were nearly 500,000 slaves on the island, and they outnumbered their masters by a ton. Essentially, they were able to outnumber their masters (and some reenforcment troops) to win independence. -
Padre Hidalgo calls for Mexican Independence
He was a priest in a small village. He was the first person to advocate and make efforts for independence. He agreed with the enlightenment thinkers ideals. He lead an army of 80,000 people to Mexico city. He was defeated in 1811. -
Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo
The night before the battle, it rained. His calvery got stuck in the rain. The general from the other side realised this and easily defeated him. However, Napolean went back to France and said he won to make everyone think that he was a hero.
