    Mitch Albom is a student at Brandies University. Mitch first meets Morrie when he joins Morrie's psychology class. Mitch enjoyed his class's so much that he began taking more and more, this created a friendship between the two.

    Morrie isn't feeling well so him and his wife go to the doctor to see what is wrong. They find out that Morrie has ALS and that there is no cure. The doctor tells Morrie to get his "affairs" in order and that he only has a couple of more months to live.

    While Mitch is flipping through channels he sees Morrie on the televison. He sees that Morrie is confined to a a wheel chair and is unable to walk. He is talking about refusing to be depressed and accepting his own death. Mitch flashes back to his first day with in Morries class. He makes the decison to go visit his old friend

    The first Tueday that Mitch visits Morrie he brings him a big bag of food and they sit at the table and talk. They talk about world issues. Morrie tells Mitch that the most important thing in life is how to give out love and how to let love in.

    Mitch returns to spend a second Tuesday with Morrie. Once again, Mitch has brought Morrie bags of food. Now, Morrie is confined to his study, and keeps a bell by his side to signal for help. Mitch asks Morrie if he feels sorry for himself. Morrie replies that at times, he does, usually in the mornings. He mourns for his body and the control that he has lost, and cries if he needs to. Afterwards Morrie moves on and recognizes how lucky he is to have time to say goodbye to his love

    On Mitch's fourth visit Morrie and Mitch talk about death. Morrie explains to Mitch that everyone is aware that they are going to die but no one actually wants to believe it. Morrie is now dependent on an oxygen machine and Mitch asks Morrie if he is perpared to die.

    Mitch arrives at Morries house with a bag of food. He brought a tape recorder as well. Mitch does this so that he can remember Morrie after his death. On the plane ride back to Detroit, Mitch makes a list of common issues and questions about life and relationships that he plans to talk about with Morrie. He brings the list with him when he returns to Boston for his fourth visit with Morrie.

    Morrie tells Mitch that "one's family is one's foundation, as the love and caring that a family gives is supremely valuable." He then quotes Auden, his favorite poet, who said, "Love or perish." Mitch writes this down. Morrie says that friends are not the same as having family. They can be there sometimes, but family is constantly there. Morrie then reminisces about his childhood. Mitch listens.

    Morrie is now coughing more violently than ever and struggles to breath as he talks. He explains to Mitch that he is consciously "detaching himself from the experience". Morrie tells Mitch that he has learned to detach himself from the most frighting moments, like when his "cheast seizes up and he is unable to breathe."

    Mitch asks Morrie how he keeps from envying him and his youth. Morrie replies that it is "impossible" for him not to envy young people. Morrie says that the point of aging is to accept your age at that moment. Morrie says he has already lived through his thirties, now it is Mitch's turn.

    Morrie talks to Mitch about money. He tells him that there are things that are more meaningful in life than just money. He tells him to devote himself to loving and giving generously to his community, He gives Mitch some ideas like volunteering at a local senior home. Mitch is now realizing that, after all of his years spent driven by wanting to earn and make lots of money that he cannot find happiness in money happiness is found in other ways.

    Morrie can no longer eat any of the food Mitch brings him because he is restricted to a diet of liquids. His condition is drastically worse. The disease has reached his lungs, which he always said would "mark his death". Morrie talks about how he wants to meet Mitch's wife Janine. When Morrie meets Janine she sings to him, he is so moved that he crys.

    Morrie stresses about how important forgivness is. He had a friend named Norman. Norman and Morrie were good friends until Norman moved to Chicago. Morries wife Charlotte was going for surgery and Norman new about it but never called Morrie, this upset Morrie deeply. When Norman had called to apologize months later, Morrie did not forgive him. Norman then died of cancer Morrie felt very guilty. He calls himself "lucky" for having the time to forgive himself and others while he is dying.

    Morrie must breathe through an oxygen tub. Mitch hates the sight of the oxygen tube because he sees it as a symbol of hopelessness. Morrie brings up Mitch's brother. Mitch's brother has cancer and refuses to talk to Mitch. Morrie assures Mitch that the realtionship with his brother will restore in time.

    Morrie is barely able to speak, though he manages to tell Mitch that "he is his friend, a good soul, and that he loves him." He tells Morrie that he will return next Tuesday. He gives Morrie one last farewell kiss, and finally, he cries.

    Morrie had died on Saturday morning. Two days before his death he had slipped into a coma. Mitch believes Morrie had died this way on purpose. He did not want to scar any of his family members in the way that he had been scarred by each of his parents' tragic deaths.The funeral was small even though many had wanted to attend. Morrie has suggested to Mitch that he talk about him at his gravesite. Mitch does this and explains it as being "surprisingly natural"
