Back in America
Mr. Mccourt was born in America but never remembered it since he was so young at the time and his parents were planning on going back to Ireland. This is ver significant to the story because he is coming back to where he was born to have a better life. In America he woud be able to get a real job and have a steady income, have a family, and be happy all at the same time. In many other places in the world at the time this was just a dream. -
First Job and Apartment
Mr. Mccourt was able to get help from a priest to be able start his life in America. He was able to get a job as a front lobby man in a hotel and he was also able to get an apartment for a low price. This is very significant because now he 1. makes money and 2. has a place to stay for a fair price. He can now go get a education if he wants or he can save up the money he has left by the end of the week to buy new clothes and maybe shoes. -
First "Friend"
After working a couple of weeks and learning things about where he lives Frank finally is able to get a "friend" that his in the same apartment complex as him. They go out together to have some fun one night. "FUN" this is another step to getting what he came for in America. although its not quite the right type of fun he is looking for its a start. Frank is starting to understand American people and what fun is like in America. -
The Military
Frank was enlisted into the Military which was upsetting. He tried to get out of it in every way he could. He was starting to see a girl and didn't want that to go away. He also was really starting to like where he lived and the people he was with. He learned a very good lesson in the boot camp though and that was if you work the hardest you get a better reward. This lesson helped Frank through the rest of the book and helped him get out on top. -
Clerk School
Frank hated Clerk school and thought it was a waste of time but got used to it. He learned a lot and but wasn't happy about it. He did learn though that every piece of information is very important. Everything you learn helps you become and better and smarter person. -

Christmas
Frank had made it to his first Christmas in America which was a big deal to him. This meant he wouldn't spend it with his family which was already upsetting enough, but now he had to find somewhere to spend it. This took him out of his comfort zone and he was able to get excess to better speaking skills and learn new things from his land lord. -
Military Church
This wasn't really a helpful scenario for Frank but he did learn something. Everyone was equal at church. He could ask any Sergeant or anyone he pleased and not get punished. Frank was happy in the church, he was able to learn a lot about his commanding officers and learn things from them. Like the easiest ways to be on there good side or the fact that he could ask anything about god to them. -
Dog Training
When frank went to Berlin to be part of a K-9 Unit he wasn't pleased to the slightest. He hated it but soon learned to like his new pal. Right as he did though he was told he was heading to a Company Clerk school to be one for his Officer. He was sad but learned to enjoy the little things while they lasted. -
Job
Frank finally got his own class at a University as well. He learned that putting in the right work will get you what you want. He was able to get his own class and rules. He got everything he has ever wanted in America.
