  • Birth of Henri Poincare

Henri Poincare was born in Nancy, France, on April 29th, 1854. As a child, he was a good student who quickly became top of his class. At 18, he declared himself a free thinker. From 1873 to 1875, he went to Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, where he studied mathematics. In 1879 he received his doctorate from the University of Pairs.

  • Inventing Qualitative Methods of Differential Equations

Poincare invented the Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations by studying the properties and behaviors of solutions to differential equations involving rates of change. These explain how one variable depends on another. During the observation he was looking to see the changes over time. He analyzed intersections of solutions to see their long term behavior. All of this lead to the creation of the Chaos Theory.

  • Foreshadowing the Butterfly Effect

The Chaos theory is study of complex, nonlinear systems that exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions.Poincare focused on predicting the motion 3 body (the planets) and found that it was difficult to solve that problem. He challenged the belief that systems could be predicted if original info was known. His work foreshadowed the concept of the butterfly effect by showing sensitivity of chaotic systems to initial conditions. https://www.famousscientists.org/henri-poincare/
  • Poincaré Conjecture

Poincare studied structures of manifolds in topology, homotopy, and homology. He introduced a concept of algebra that we know today. He also created a set of invariants that classified/characterized different topological spaces. These captured features of the spaces and helped understand their properties. His studies and developments were essential for our understanding of topological spaces and for the eventual proof of the conjecture.

  • Death of Henri Poincare

Henri Poincare died in Pairs, France at the age of 58. After a prostate surgery, it appeared successful. A few days later he died from an embolism when getting ready in the morning. He is now buried in the Poincaré family vault in the Cemetery of Montparnasse, Paris. In 2004, the French Minister of Education suggested that he be reburied in the Pantheon in Paris. The Pantheon is reserved for French citizens deserving of the highest honor. https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Henri_Poincaré
