He graduated from The Taft School in Connecticut. Is was here that he found his passion for physics and mathematics.

After earning his Bachelors in 1943, Masters in 1946, he earned his PHD from Harvard University. He was also teaching at Harvard starting in 1948.

His most well known achievement, also simply known as Structure, was published and is still widely referred to as one of the most influential and frequently cited academic books.
