Noboru's Peeping Hole
The novel starts with Noboru, the main character, finding a hole in his chest of drawers that allows him to spy on his mother while she is in her room. -
Noboru and Fusako meet Ryuji
Fusako takes Noboru to the pier, as Noboru and very interested in ships and hearing sailing stories. At the pier, they meet Ryuji, a sailor aboard the Rakuyo, and Fusako begins to converse with him. -
Ryuji and Fusako's Romance
Soon after Fusako meets Ryuji, they develop a romantic relationship. One night after dinner, they have sex in Fusako's bedroom while Noboru watches and marvels at the sight from the hole in his chest. -
Noboru Sneaks Out with His Gang
Noboru lies to his mother about going for a swim, and instead meets up with his philosophical gang to kill a kitten. They do this to practice objectivity and dispassion to rid themselves of responding to situations in an emotional way. Soon after, Ryuji finds Noboru with his friends at the park after taking a swim in the fountain. Ryuji's enthusiasm and physical appearence embarasses Noboru, and he begins to regret thinking that Ryuji was a hero. -
Ryuji Leaves to Sail Again Until Winter
Ryuji has to return to his ship as the second hand, and Noboru begins viewing him as heroic again. Before Ryuji leaves, he shares stories of sailing around the world to Noboru, who is astonished and deeply interested in what Ryuji has to say. Noboru and Fusako promise to write Ryuji while he's on his journey. -
Ryuji Returns and Proposes
In the winter, Ryuji returns at last and begins to question whether he wants to continue sailing or not. He decides to abandon the sailor life and proposes to Fusako, who accepts. Noboru is yet to know about the engagement. -
Noboru Finds Out About the Proposal
Ryuji and Fusako announce their engagement together to Noboru over dinner soon after, and Noboru is horrified, but doesn't show it. Ryuji was becoming exactly what he had feared, a father, and not the spontaneous sailor hero that him and his gang had initially looked up to. -
Noboru Gets Caught Spying
Later in the story, Fusako and Ryuji have sex, and like too many times before, Noboru spies on them through his peephole. He accidentally falls asleep in the open chest where the peephole shines light into Fusako's room. When she wakes up, Fusako checks on her son and soon realizes what he had been doing for many months. She is horrified and asks Ryuji to beat him or to punish him in some way. Ryuji takes the father approach, and Noboru decides that enough is enough. He is done with Ryuji. -
Charges Against Ryuji Tsukazaki
Noboru writes 18 charges against Ryuji into a journal to present to the gang. He is fed up with the hypocrisy and suppression of freedom that fathers cast upon their children as him and the gang have decided. The chief of their 5-man gang reads the charges, and decides that there is no saving Ryuji, and that he must be dealt with immediately. The boys decide that they must drug his tea and cut him open to reveal his glory to the world. -
The Murder of Ryuji Tsukazaki
Noboru lures Ryuji out to the gang's usual spot, far up a mountain which is somewhat close to home. Ryuji views it as a chance for father-son bonding, which is ironically the reason Noboru and the gang feel like he needs to die in the first place. Once they make it up to the spot, Ryuji beings telling the gang about his sailing stories, and the places he has been around the world, and how they all make him think about a peaceful death. Soon after, he is given the poisoned tea, and put to sleep.
