The readers also see how deeply Kino cares for his family by his swift actions when he lunged toward the scorpion with little hesitation, just as the scorpion attacked Coyotito. The doctors refusal to help cure Coyotito when he had poison in his body from the sting 4pm
This event is significant to the reader because a mjor theme is revealed and this theme happens to be rich vs poor. "Has he any money? No, they never have any money. I, I alone in the world am supposed to work for nothing - and I am tired of it. See if he has anymoney!" By the doctors tone, you can see that he holds power over those who may not have as much in life. Lastly, this part is also important because it gives Kino the incentive to go hunting for the pearl, which would save his baby. -
The doctor finally decides to "help" cure Coyotito 8pm
"I was not in when you came this morning. But now, at the first chance, I have come to see the baby." This was said by the doctor, and here we see that Kino has grown skeptical of the doctor and doesn't know if he should trust him or not. It was also kind of eerie that Coyotito's got a lot worse after the doctor had given Coyotito medicine. -
The Dark Figure 11pm
Kino's hand crept into his breast where his knife hung on a string, and then he sprang likean angry cat, leaped striking and spitting for the dark thing he knew was in the corner of the house. He felt cloth, struck at it with his knife and missed, and struck again and felthis knife go through cloth, and then his head crashed with lightning and exploded with pain. There was a soft scurry in the doorway, and running steps for a moment, and then silence. -
Kino and Juana find the perfect pearl 10am
This event is important because after Kino and Juana find the pearl, new hopes and dreams arise for them. Kino starts to imagine all of the possibilities with owning such a pearl as his. Kino dreamed of providing education for his son, a real marriage for him and Juana, etc. It seemed for a moment that the God's were with Kino and wanted to help him provide a living for his family. "In the surface of the great pearl he could see dream forms." -
The value of the pearl 11am
"I am cheated," Kino cried fiercely. "My pearl is not for sale here. I will go, perhaps even to the capital." -
Kino kills a man 5am
Kino moved sluggishly, arms and legs stirred like those of a crushed bug, and a thick muttering came from his mouth. Now, in an instant, Juana knew that the old life was goneforever. A dead man in the path and Kino's knife, dark-bladed beside him, convinced her.All of the time Juana had been trying to rescue something of the old peace, of the time before the pearl. But now it was gone, and there was no retrieving it. And knowing this, she abandoned the past instantly. -
Family departs the small town and heads north toward the Capitol 7am
Then Juan Tomás, when the evening approached, talked long with his brother. "Wherewill you go?" "To the north," said Kino. "I have heard that there are cities in the north." -
Coyotito gets killed 7pm
And then Kino stood uncertainly. Something was wrong, some signal was trying to getthrough to his brain. Tree frogs and cicadas were silent now. And then Kino's braincleared from its red concentration and he knew the sound - the keening, moaning, risinghysterical cry from the little cave in the side of the stone mountain, the cry of death. -
The pearl is thrown back into the gulf 7pm
And Kino drew back his arm and flung the pearl with all his might. Kino and Juana watched it go, winking and glimmering under the setting sun. They saw the little splash in the distance, and they stood side by side watching the place for a long time.
