Birth
Richard Montgomery was born December 2nd, 1736 in Dublin, Ireland. He was the third son. His father, Thomas Montgomery was a member of Irish Parliament. His mother’s name was Mary Franklyn. -
Schooling
September 15th, 1754, Richard Montgomery went to school at Trinity College. He favored books and studying over spending time outside even throughout his younger years. He did not take a degree. -
Joining the Army
Richard joined the British army on September 21st 1756 as an ensign in the 17th regiment of foot. When his regiment saw action overseas they went to America to fight in the French and Indian war. -
Farming
April 2nd, 1772 Richard moved to America where he became interested in farming which led to buying his own farmland. -
Marriage
Richard married May 25th, 1773. His wife’s name was Janet Livingston. They lived in Rhinebeck near New York. -
Becoming A Brigadier General
When Richard moved to America there were problems between England and the Colonies. He offered his services to the colonists and June 22, 1775 he became a Brigadier General. -
Accompanying Schuyler
July 2nd, 1775 Richard was a second-in-command in the expedition against Canada after General Philip Schulyer. He went to Ticonderoga, which is Philip's headquarters and when he arrived Philip was collecting supplies and gathering troops. -
On the Way to Canada
On the 28th of August 1775 Richard was getting anxious and started the army on the way to Canada without any sort of permission. When General Philip Schulyer found out he was very understanding and joined the advancing army. -
Death
December 31st, 1775 was the date of Richard Montgomery's death. He died during the attack on Quebec. They were ambushed during a blizzard by a naval cannon that killed a bunch of people including Richard. He was a major general at the time. -
Burial
Richard Montgomery was buried on the spot when he was found by the British. Later in 1818 his body was found and moved to New York at St. Paul’s Church.
