    Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart first crossed paths when the Rockers faced the then Tag Team Champions on Saturday Night main event. Both teams had been vying for this match for ages and when they finally got it, it was an absolute car crash. The ropes middle rope cut went loose so that completly changed the match altogether.

    With both men getting accustom to singles life without their tag team partner, Bret got the head start having being in the WWF three years longer then Michaels. He won his first WWF title against Ric Flair back in 92, at a taped live event in Saskatoon. This being the first of his five championship reigns.

    When Michaels was first signed by the WWF with Marty Janetty, they were let go a few days later because Michaels felt he didn't look good outside the ring. When he became a singles competitor he made friends with some of the new guys around town Kevin Nash (Diesel) Razor Ramon (Scott Hall) and The 123 Kid (Sean Waltman) these guys were known as 'The Kliq'. They built up a bad reputation, they weren't liked in the locker room because they were seen like they were influencing things back stage.

    Despite having some interaction between now and their tag title rivalary, it was in 96 when things started getting personal between the two. In a 60 minute iron man match that HBK was giving a light schedule for to train where as Bret had a rough schedule flying around the world to promote the WWF. In the video package leading up to it, HBK looked like Rocky about, where Bret was shown being bet up by his Dad in the famous Hart Dungeon. Shawn won, and Bret took a few months off.

    The month before Wrestlemania where Shawn was due to take on Bret Hart in a rematch from the previous year, he was "told" by doctors that his knee injury was career ending. The crowd were heckling him throughout the entire promo because they knew he was didn't want to lose to Bret. It was around this time too that Bret was offered a big money contract with WCW but chose to sign a 20 year contract with the WWF.

    One week before Wrestlemania 13, there was a Championship cage match betweent Sid and Bret Hart. Undertaker was to face Sid at WM13 for the belt if Sid retained. If Bret won the match, Stone Cold Steve Austin would face Hart at WM13 for the belt. Both Stone Cold and Undertaker got involved in the match to assist their potential opponents and Sid retained. After the commercial break, Bret pushed Vince McMahon over and start swearing at him.

    Both men were making insults to each other despite not being in a feud together. Shawn was hitting jibes at him claiming he was having "Sunny Days" trying to say that Bret was having an affair with Sunny one of the female superstars. Bret on the other hand was having passing remarks hinting that Shawns knee injury wasn't legitimate, he was also slating him for posing nude in the magazine playgirl. Shortly after the two had a fight in the locker room which meant Shawn had to take a few weeks off.

    Bret got out of his 20year contract and was heading for WCW, but he was champion at the time, his last match was to be against Michaels but he wanted to win the match as it was in his hometown of Montreal. Vince and Shawn didn't want that, so they told him one thing and done another. Shawn put a hold on him and the ref finished it. Shawn acted like he didn't know what was going on as Bret lost it with Vince. Backstage Bret knocked Vince out with a punch, he had a black eye for a few days after.
