  • Birth

Stokely Carmichael came into the world on June 29, 1941. Little did we know that such a brave Civil Rights Activist was born.
  • Moved to the United States of America

Stokely, his siblings, and his father move to the United States for economic reasons. His mother had already moved earlier in the year, and was living with her mother. They moved in and Stokely started school at the young age of two due to his intelligence.
  • Attends College

Carmichael had attended a white only school the previous year because the principal was interested in his intellectual success. Many white only colleges offered him scholarships, some that would have covered all of Carmichael's expenses, but he denied them and decided to attend Howard University.

After graduating college, Carmichael joined the Student Non-violence Coordinating Committee, (SNCC). A little less than a year after joining, he became the leader of the SNCC.
  • Picketing and Violence

In 1965, many angry blacks began to picket and caught the eye of white officers and officials. Carmichael was one of these people and was imprisoned and shot in the leg.
  • Good Friend's Death

Jonathan Daniels, a good friend of Carmichael's who picketed with him, died in 1965 after being shot by an officer. Carmichael stopped picketing for four days, but became angry and protested on August 18, 1965.

    Arrested after Demonstration
Carmichael gathered some of his friends and protested on August 18, 1965 after his friends death. He used the phrase "Black Power" during this demonstration, which made officers mad. He was arrested and was forced to tell his friends to go home.
  • Joins Black Panther Party

After being released from jail, Carmichael joined the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party was a group of picketers who wanted violence, unlike Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who wanted to picket without violence. Carmichael spent the rest of his years with the Black Panther Party until he eventually died in 1998.
  • Death

During a march, Carmichael complained about a sharp pain in his arms and legs and was rushed to the hospital. He was later diagnosed with prostate cancer. He undertook surgery immediately and died after coming out of it. Little did we know that we lost such a great leader.
