When Stephen was eight
By the time he was eight he was thinking about becoming a scientist. -
When Stephen was nearly out of high school
Stephen's secondary school performance gave Frank Hawkings a cause he had better begin pulling strings at Oxford. Hawkings had nearly perfect marks on the physics section. -
Hawkings heading off to Oxford
At the age of seventeen Stephen went to Oxford University to study natural science with emphasis in physics. Hawkings was lonely and bored most of the students were older because they had taken time for military service. -
Hawkings second year
Halfway through his second year Stephen began enjoying Oxford when Robert Bercnan his physics tutor at the time was helping him. -
Stephen applying to do Ph.D. work
Hawkings chose cosmology to study. He just found it really exciting because it really did involve the big question where did the universe come from? and that is what he wanted to know. He applied to do Ph.D. research at Cambridge. -
Hawkings Problems
When Stephen was home for the Christmas break his father noticed problems and took him to a doctor. -
In the hospital for some tests
A little after his twenty-first brithday Hawkings was in the hospital for some tests and muscle samples. When he was in the hospital Stephen was across from a boy that was dieing and in pain from leukemia and Hawkings just thought clearly there were people that were worse off than him but still he was deeply depressed. -
The release of the Hawkings from the hospital
After two weeks they release Stephen and told him that what he had wasn't a typical case. The doctors suggested he go back to his work because he had a rare disease known as Lou Gehrig's disease. That almost always kills you in two or three years. Then Stephen realized that if he was going to die he should do some good for the people. -
Hawkings starting to enjoy life
At a New Year's Party in St. Alban's Stephen was visiting his family before entering the hospital for more tests and met a girl named Jane Wilde. Then after he got release from the hospital they met again But by then he was walking with a cane. -
Hawkings and Jane's friendship and relationship
Stephen thought Jane was a very nice girl and the friendship developed slowly but after awhile they both realized that together they could make eachothers lives worthwhile. So they got engaged and for Hawkings that changed his life. -
Getting married
Stephen was happier than he has ever been before. He was in love at the age of twenty-three. -
Starting a family
The Hawkings decided to start a family they had the their first son Robert. It was four years since the doctors told Stephen only had two years to live. -
Disease slowly deteriorating again
Hawkings physical condition began deteriorating him again. He had to start using crutches. He felt like he lossed his independence in doing day to day things. -
Finding out the universe
By this time of his life he had lossed the use of his legs and most of his body. He is now in a wheelchair but he is very happy with his work and he is now finding out what the universe is like and how it might have begun.
