The New Girl
In October, the new girl, who we find out later that her name is Lee, walks into school with pins in her face and green hair. This character is semi-important later in the story and helps the development of the main character, Scott. (Lubar 93) -
Running For School Councile
Scott decided to run for school council because the girl he has a major crush on is trying to become the class president. We learn that Scott will go to extensive levels to be in the same room with Julia. (Lubar 98) -
Why Scott Loves Books
Here, we learn the Scott wasn't always a book-worm. When he broke his arm, Scott was in the hospital and shared a room with a boy named Tobie. Tobie loved books and wanted Scott to read them too. After Scott had left the hospital, Scott had died but gave Scott a box of some of his books since they became good friends in the hospital. Scott then read every book in that box and fell in love with books. (Lubar 100) -
Student Council
Scott got a spot on student council, but Julia didn't. Scott feels kind of stupid for trying so hard to be with Julia since he won't be around her now. (Lubar110) -
Bobby Came Home
Bobby came home from running away, so that means the Scott is no longer an only child. He was abandoned over the weekend so his parents could help Bobby find a house. (Lubar 131) -
Lee's Injury
When Lee walked up to Scott in homeroom, he noticed that Lee had bandages on her wrists. She said that she accidentally hurt herself in the kitchen. As the reader, both we and Scott don't know if that's the truth or if she either was cutting or slitting. Later that night, Scott wrote a letter to his sibling-to-be about self-harm and how terrible it is.(Lubar 132) -
Moving
After the dance, Scott convinces Patrick to read Ender's Game. When he called after he finished the book, he didn't sound like himself. It turned out that Patrick's family was moving halfway across the country. Scott realized he and his friends are growing distant. So much for all for one and one for all. (Lubar 117) -
School Paper
Before, Scott only had to go to the football game once a week and write an article about it, but now he was put in charge of both wrestling and basketball. There are two basketball games a week and two or three wrestling matches so Scott will no free time. (Lubar 142) -
Scott's New Friend
Mr. Franka sends Scott to the office to pick something up for him and when he walked in, the secretary told him to sit down. While he was sitting there, the boy who relieved Scott from his "spare" cange everyday, Wesley,strolls into the room. Scott tells him that he is in the office for preambulation, or in other words, walking. Wesley warms up to Scott and actually likes him.(Lubar 169) -
"A Football Feast"
A satire that Scott wrote poking fun at the football team was publised into the school paper. Mouth publised it thinking it was a nice gesture but in actuality, he put Scott's life in danger. He made fun of Vernon and his teamates and they were mad. Acott figured this wou,d happen, so he left school early to try to escape the pain the Vernon and his friends would give him. (Lubar 181)
