    Leif Eriksson was an explorer born shortly before 1000 A.D. Olaf told him to convert religion across Greenland and spread Christianity to all the settlers that were there. He eventually made it to Greenland but, as one story has it, his ships went off course on the return home, they found dry ground at last on the North American continent, which is now Nova Scotia. He left that winter then never returned back.

    John Cabot was born on May 23, 1450. In 1497, he tried to make a voyage to Asia, but somehow ended up in Canada. Still thinking it was Asia he claimed land. In the end, John Cabot claimed North America for England, In which set the path for England's rise to power in the 16th and 17th centuries. Nobody know how or when he died.

    Christopher columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. In 1476, he had his first voyage that almost costed him his life. Columbus later wanted to go to the "new world", but he got rejected 5 times! Finally, the Spanish monarchy of Isabella of Castille agreed to finance his expidition to the new world, but it wasn't until his third voyage he actually reached the mainland. He died on May 20, 1506.

    Amerigo Vespucci was born on March 9, 1454, in Florence Italy. He went on may voyages. May 10, 1497 was his first voyage, but his third Voyage was the most successful. That is where he had discovered (present-day) Rio de Janeiro and Rio de la Plata. He thought he had discovered a new continent, therefore he called South America the "New World". Later In 1507, America was named after him by a mapper. He died on February 22, 1512.

    Fernandid Magellan was born In 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal. As a boy he was intrested in map-making and navigation. In his mid-20s, he was already sailing large fleets and was even engaged in combat! In 1519, he sailed out to find a better route to the spice island for the Roman Emperor Charles V. Finally by October 1520, Magellan and his men had entered what is now called the Strait of Magellan which is named after him. he died on April 27, 1521.

    Jacques Cartier was born on December 31, 1491. In 1534, France’s King Francis I had told him to lead a voyage to the New World in order to look for gold and other riches, as well as a new route to Asia. He made three voyages in total. When he arrived back from his third voyage, the minerals he brought back to France were found to have no value. Therefore, H received no more royal commissions. He died on September 1, 1557

    John white was born in 1540 in London, England. In April 1585, John White sailed on an journey in which he established a settlement on Roanoke Island. In 1586 the colony was forgotten, therefore, he made a return to England. A bit later,In 1587 he sailed as governor of a second colony that Sir Walter Raleigh strove to find in North America. Later that july the colony of Roanoak Island was established.

    Sir Walter Raleigh was born on January 22, 1552 in East Budleigh, England. When he was 17, he fought with the French Huguenots. He also became favored by Queen Elizabeth after he had served in her army in Ireland. In 1585, he was officially knighted. Later between 1584 and 1589, he helped establish a colony near Roanoke Island, which he had decided to name Virginia.

    Chrstopher Newport
    Christopher newport was born on December 1561 in Harwich, Essex, England. In 1607, he lead three ships to Jamestown. The ships were named Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. Later in September 1608, his instructions were to search for any survivors of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, resume exploring for gold mines, and stage a coronation of Powhatan. Smith decided to object to these instructions because they were unrealistic, but the coronation was carried out, and it became a farce.

    George calvert was born in 1579 in Yorkshire, England. He was knighted in 1617 and he assisted in the House of Commons beginning. Later in 1617 he switched to Catholicism. In 1628, he moved to Avalon, but wasn't welcome due to his beliefs. So, he returned to England to request land, what would later become Maryland, so he could practice Catholicism. Sadley, he died in 1632 before permission was granted to him.

    John Smith was born in January of 1580. In 1606, he set sail, but while on the trip, he was accused of rebellion and was almost hanged. He stayed alive, but was placed into custody, he arrived with the group at his destination later in April 1607. They named the settlement Jamestown and it became known as the first actual British colny in North America. In 1609, he returned to england. He died on June 21, 1631.

    John Winthrop was born on january 22, 1588 in Suffolk County, England. Most of the Puritans Colony's carachter came from his ideas and actions. In 1629, he went to America with the Massachusettes Bay Colony. Later, he became government of the colony.

    William Bradford
    William Bradford was born on March 19, 1590. He became a leading figure in the Puritans' Separatist movement. Eventually he and other believers sailed from England on the Mayflower to create a colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He then became longtime governor. Unfortunately, after a disaturous winter, he died in 1657. Luckily most of the history of the settlement was recorded in his work which was two volumes total.

    Anne Hutchinson was born on July 1591 in Alford, United Kingdom. While growing up, she was taught to question the religious teachings by her father, who a deacon. In 1634, Hutchinson and her husband went with a Protestant Minister to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. There, she shared her own interpretations of Cotton’s teachings, which against the precepts of the governing ministers. Therefore, she banished and later killed in a massacre by Native Americans in 1643.

    William Penn was born on October 24, 1644 in London. Penn had become a figure of importance in the Quaker community in the 1670s. Later in 1675, he was asked to break up a land contoversey between the Quaker property owners in the American colony of West New Jersey. After completing the controversy, using his legal knowledge and leadership techniques, he was chosen to organize the founding of a Quaker colony in America. This new colony had religious toleraance.

    James Oglethorp was born on December 22, 1696 in london England. In 1722, he went on to be elected to his country’s parliament. He had served for over three decades. He later pushed for an end to slavery and impressment. In 1733, he travelled to America and found the Savannah, Which is the colony that would eventually become Georgia. He came back to England in the mid-1740s. He later died on June 30 of 1785.

Later in 1760 he was named military govenor of Montreal and became the commander of British soldiers in North America in 1763. He died on April 2, 1787.

He was a big part of the Boston Tea Party and he played a huge role in resisting the stamp act. In 1794-1797 he had his final political job as Massachusetts governor. He died on October 2, 1803.

He also assisted George Washingtons army in New York. He died on May 9, 1810.

He later became a spy, and spied on the british. During the Boston Tea Party he helped dump tea, but on April 18th of 1775 at 10pm he went aroud town and warned the colonists that the British were coming.

    Patrick Henry was born on May 29, 1736. He was best known fr his quote "Give me liberty or give me death." During the debate over the Stamp Act of 1765, Henry spoke out against the measure. In 1774, he was chosen to serve as a represenative to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Finally, in 1790, Henry left public service and chose to return to being a lawyer. He died on June 6, 1799.

    Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut. He was known an American hero of the Revolutionary War and he soon became one of the most famous traitors in U.S. history. In 1779, he entered into secret negotiations with the British, agreeing to turn over the U.S. post at West Point in return for money and a command in the British army. They found out the plan, and even though the plan was over, Arnold had escaped to British lines.

He put together the War of 1812, and served two terms as president. Sadly, he died on June 28, 1836.
