A camp by the riverside
The story begins by a riverbank where a group of American Revoltionary soldiers are camping waiting for orders to move to the battle lines. A man named Jim has gotten word that the will be heading into battle and everyone is very pleased. This is and important event because it is the base to the book. -
Henry Fleming
Henry Fleming is the main character of the story and has just got word of the group moving to battle. Henry joined the army because he felt a sense of nationalism and dreamed of acting in valor and courage. He is very excited to go to battle but nervous at the same time. -
An unmoved army
The next day the army learns the Jim was wrong and Henry starts to get nervous. He starts to wonder if he will have the courage to actually fight. This is an important piece of information because the reader learns of Henrys' uncertainty to fight. -
The battle begins
Jim awakes Henry, Jim says that they are under attack and need to get moving they get up and stary running to the battle passing already many dead bodies. This doesnt help Henry and he thinks he will be unable to fight. They get to the line and start fighting, Henry wants to run but is surrounded and forced to fight. -
The Tattered Man
Many toops around Henry have been killed and he decides to run passing a general on his way. Henry runs into the "Tattered man" a man getting escorted away from the fight because of his wounds. Henry is ashamed, he wished he would have stayed back and fought like the tettered man. The man keep asking Henry where he was hurt. -
Jim's death
Henry and the tattered man run into Jim, who now has horrable wounds. Jim starts talking to Henry but mistakes him for his other friend and Jim dies leaving Henry in shock. Henry is outraged and decides to run back to battle leaving Jims body and the tattered man. This is a very important event that makes Henry want to go back to war. -
Back to war
Henry is on his way back to his group but on the way gets wacked over the head by someone from the same army. With his new injury he still manages to get back to the front line and somehow back with the same group of men. No one thinks he ran and that he only got separated. Henry has a battle on his hands. -
Another battle
Another battle starts and Henry is pumped and willing to fight for anything. He fights like a bull and is acting in true valor, even further getting complemented by his lietenant. He fights even harder and they win the battle. -
Generals not happy.
After the battle Henry overhears some Generals talking about how pittiful their fighting was and Henry decides to fight even harder at the next charge. Henry as he put it, "has never been more ready" to fight. This is also a very important event because without the mean words said by the Generals Henry wouldnt have fought so hard at the next battle. -
Flag down
The charge is about to happen when the leader of it (with the flag) are shot down. Henry rushes over and takes the flag to lead the charge and runs into battle with an army behind him. Henry leads the army to victory doing other amazing acts. -
All over
With everything over it is time to head for home. Henry remenises on everything that has happened and all of his cowardly doings. He decides to forget them and just remember all the good he has done. Everyone, even the Generals, are impressed by what he has done.
