Abraham Lincoln
During Abraham Lincoln's presidency the Emmancipation Proclomation was issued. This document freed the slaves. Also Lincoln spoke the Gettysburg address after the battle of Antietam. He was a huge part of the civil war an the freedom of the slaves. Lincoln was assasinated by John Wilkes-Booth. -
Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson became president after the assaination of Lincoln. During his presidency he passed the 13th ammendment, abolishing slavery. He also passed the 14th ammendment, providing equal protection for all citizens. -
Ulysses S. Grant
Grant was a war heroe, adored by the american people. During his presidency he established an 8-hour work day for federal employees. Also, he signed the 14th ammendment allowing black males the right to vote. Grant signed legislation declaring Yellowstone as the first national park. -
Rutherford B. Hayes
Rutherford B Hayes practically stopped reconstruction when he took office. Also while Hayes was in office, the whites in the south continued to keep the blacks from voting.Hayes defeated the idea of "Senatorial Courtesy". -
Chester A. Arthur
During Arthur's presidency he did his best to counter cronyism ans patronage. He also passed a law banning salary kicks. Arthur pushed for tariff reduction. -
Grover Cleveland
Grocer Cleveland saw himself as a watch dog for congress. He also disapproved of temperance and won the support of Irish, Germans, and Eastern Europeans. He opposed territorial expansion. -
Benjamin Harrison
Harrison advoctated the conservation of forests. He supported the Sherman Antitrust Act which was one of the first acts to try and limit the power of large corporations. Harrison also convened the first Pan-American conferance in 1889. -
William Mckinley
Mckinley led the United States to its first war with a European power since the war of 1812. Also it was while Mckinley was in office thatCuba gained its independnce. He was assasinated on September 6th and died from his wound on September 14th, 1901 -
Teodore Roosevelt
Roosevelt opened the International Court of Arbitration.He also played a huge role in extending the use of arbitration in international affairs. He was a good office mediator between Russia and Japan. -
William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft introduced dollar diplomacy. He also allianated Roosevelt when he atempted to break up U.S steel. Taft made a conscious effort to lower tariffs.
