Presidential Terms in American History

By vberks
  • George Washington

Washington was our first president. He had the option to serve more than two terms, but decided to limit it to only eight years of service.
  • Thomas Jefferson

Jefferson is a popular president for his role in the Democratic-Republican party and public fights for citizens' rights.
  • Andrew Jackson

Jackson was one of the most bad-ass presidents of all time. He was known for being a drunk and engaged in multiple gun draws. More notably, he was the first president from the "South" and a popular war general
  • James K. Polk

Polk wasn't necessarily the best president, but he did gain a lot of land for American by provoking Mexico in the Mexican-American war. He was an early Democrat and Southerner, as well.
  • Abraham Lincoln

Arguably one of the best presidents of all time, Lincoln brought the country together after the Civil War and freed black slaves in the South. Shortly after he was elected to a second term, however, he was assassinated. His successor, Vice President Andrew Johnson, is arugably one of the WORST presidents of all time.
  • James A. Garfield

A Republican, Garfield was only in office for seven months, before he was assassinated.
  • Grover Cleveland

Cleveland is the only president to serve two terms that were not consecutive. After he finished his first term in 1889, he returned to New York as state governor and ran for the presidential office again in 1893.
  • Theodore Roosevelt

TR is also one of America's most bad-ass presidents. His hobbies included boxing and drinking, and he frequented Africa were he killed elephants and things of the like (there are photos). Despite serving two terms and benefiting the public by breaking up big company monopolies, he lost for his third term, where he ran with the self-invented Bull Moose Party.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt

A descendent of TR, FDR is the only president to serve four terms (but not fully, because he died in office during the fourth term). FDR steered the American public through the Great Depression and World War II, all while suffering from polio. He is often regarded as one of the best presidents in American history.
  • John F. Kennedy

Kennedy is often known as the most attractive president of all time. While in office, he handled several crises including the Bay of Pigs and the beginnings of the Cold War. Kennedy was also rumored to be involved in numerous affairs. While campaigning for his reelection in 1963 in Dallas, Kennedy was assassinated, and Lyndon B. Johnson assumed the position.
  • Ronald Reagan

Reagan is another president known for good looks, as he was a movie star before he took up the office. During his terms, America suffered great recessions and issues with the oil industry. Reagan did befriend the former Soviet Union leadership, however, steering the country away from Cold War antics.
  • Barack Obama

Obama was elected as the first African-American president. During his first term, Obama faced a huge recession, continuing warfare in the Middle East and social issues such as gay marriage. Obama was recently reelected and will serve until 2016.
