Poseidon wanted to be different so he decided to not get involved in the war, at first. After seeing people start to ignore his presence, he thinks that there is no other way to get attention besides getting involved in the war.

Poseidon watches the pleasing war as blood spills viciously. He depicts the ups and downs of each side and decides that the war is about even.

After watching Some of the Greeks' most powerful warriors, like Ulysses, Ajax, Agamemnon, Diomedes, and Machaon all defeated, he realizes something fishy is going on. He concludes that Zeus must be favoring the Trojans and it is throwing the war off balance.

Poseidon decides he wants to side with the Greeks and spreads his word of witnessing unjust actions by Naiad, Neired, Dryad, and eventually to Hera.

Poseidon persuades Hera by telling her how beautiful and seductive she was. Through the power of compliments, Hera agrees to try to distract and seduce her husband while Poseidon works his magic for the Greeks.
