Paul Feyerabend: Enemy of Science

  • Birth

    Feyerabend was Born in Vienna. His father was a civil servant and his mother was a seamstress.
  • Enter the Nazis

    Shortly after completing high school, he was involuntarily inducted into the Arbeitsdienst. Arbeitsdienst was a the Reich Labour Service established in Nazi Germany.
  • Nazi officer

    After serving several years in the Arbeitsdienst, he volunteered to attend officer school in hopes that the war would be over before he completed school. After his graduation of officer schooling he served on the northern part of the Eastern Front, and attained the rank of lieutenant (Preston, 2020).
  • Permanantly Crippled

    During a retreat from the Russian Army, Feyerabend was shot in the hand and the stomach. One of the bullets damaged his spinal nerves, and he had to walk with a cane for the rest of his life. He experienced significant pain regularly throughout the rest of his life.
  • Dr. F

    In 1951 he earned his doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Vienna.
  • Berkley beginnings and citizenship

    In 1959 he accepted a permanent position as a professor at Berkeley college, and applied for a Green Card to work in the US."Preston, 2020"
  • Against Method

    In 1975 Feyerabend published one of his most significant books, Against Method. The book goes into great detail of his beliefs but can be somewhat summarized by his saying "The idea that science can, and should, be run according to fixed and universal rules, is both unrealistic and pernicious" (Feyerabend, 1975) Below is a link for an outline of his book.

  • Berkley retirement

    After 30 years of teaching philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, Feyerabend finally retired.
  • The Tyranny of Science

    In 1993 Feyerabend published another one of his more significant pieces,The Tyranny of Science. In it he criticized modern beliefs of science. He stated that significant pieces of scientific ideology were based on broad generalizations and that nearly everything we think we know is a misconception (Preston, 2020).
  • Death

    In 1994 Dr. Paul Feyerabend died from a late discovered brain tumor. He was in the company of his wife, Grazia, at a clinic in Switzerland when he passed.
