    Paul was an extremely religious kid, as he served as an altar boy. He went to Catholic Church, but didn’t feel engaged, pointing out that books held his attention more completely.

    Paul, and the rest of his family are forced to move again, after his dad took a teaching job in Florida. The family lived in a boat temporarily, and that was when Paul learned to concentrate while facing adversity.

    Paul was granted a full scholarship to attend Duke University to study medicine. This accomplishment allowed Paul to establish himself as his own person and to form his own ideas about the world.
  • Haiti

    Paul visited Haiti and was completely exposed to Haitian culture and he was able to see the aid efforts and their flaws up close. Paul saw that they helped Haitians for short terms but not long term. He saw Rudolf Virchow's belief that social conditions cause sickness, and by focusing on them, general health can be approved.

    The Warden died in July, 1984, while playing a pickup game of basketball, of a heart attack at the young age of 49. Paul discovered an old letter that his father had written him saying, “I just want you to know how proud I am.” He had finally known his father’s approval. Paul no longer had something to prove.
