Road Trip
- The first major task of acquiring a life structure according to Levinson was to having a dream and incorporating it into the life structure
- After Ben found out that he had cancer, he convinced Samantha about fulfilling one of his dream of going on a road trip to find him self and to ultimatley develop as a human.

Meeting the person
- When Ben met the man at the motel, the man can of helped Ben by helping him come to terms with whether or not he was actually in love
- The man basically mentored Ben

The Book
- In hopes that Ben will reevaluate his choice and return to his plan life
- He finds that Samantha has packed a copy of a book he had written as a child, hoping that an attached note about reading it to his children someday would persuade him to return and begin treatment

He finds grumps
- While surfing, he finds a humpback whale
- Ben remembers that his father had said to him as a child that anyone who searched for Grumps would "know him when you see him"; Ben is satisfied that he has, and returns home.
- By finding what he was looking for. He manages to incorporate his dream of finding grumps into his life structure

The end of the relationship
- After Ben had cheated on Samatha, he ended the relationship with her
- This is an example of Levinson's theory because he ended a relationship to start a new chapter of adulthood
