George and Lennie spend the night in the wilderness
After traveling down south to find work, they settle down a quarter mile away from the ranch they are going to work on. They came from a ranch up north in Weed,
George is a little guy. He is the smart one of the two, though. Lennie is a huge muscular guy, but he isn't too bright. -
George and Lennie meet the ranch members
They first met the old swamper. He showed them around the bunk house. Then they met the boss. He wasn't too nice at first because he was expecting them to come last night instead of that morning. They also met Slim, Curley, Candy, and a few others. -
Curley's wife comes by the bunk house
Curley's wife always comes around "looking for Curley." She actually just likes to go around talking to the other guys at the ranch. They say she has the eye. -
First day at new job
They did all sorts of things. A main thing was to buck barley. -
Lennie gets a puppy
Lennie wants to get a puppy from Slim, since his dog just had puppies and he doesn't need them all. Slim gives him one of the pups. Lennie has a problem with petting too hard. He one time killed a mouse because he was petting it too hard. He is really strong! -
George and Lennie tell Candy about their plan
They plan on getting their own ranch someday soon. They'll have some animals, they'll plant their own crops, and they'll "live off the fat of the land." Candy asks to join in with them and move to this nice sounding place with them. -
Lennie and Curley get into a fight
Curley is the type of person who is always looking to fight with someone. Lennie doesn't like to hurt anyone, so he didn't want to have anything to do with Curley. However, Curley came after Lennie because he thought Lennie was laughing at him (but he was just day dreaming). Lennie finally grabbed Curley's fist and squeezed and didn't let go, because he didn't know better. Curley had to be sent to the hospital! He learned his lesson on picking with bigger guys than him. -
Lennie goes into Crooks' room
Crooks was a negro stable buck. He had his own room because nobody wanted to be by him. Lennie was going to look at his puppy when he saw his light on. He went inside and Crooks was surprised to see him. Eventually, Crooks let him come in and they talked. Crooks wanted to come with Lennie, George, and Candy to their future ranch, but then decided not to. Later, Candy came, then Curley's wife came. They weren't happy about that. Lennie thought Crooks was a good person. -
George kills Lennie
Since Lennie killed Curley's wife, the guys all came after him. He found his and George's special hidding spot and waited until George got there. Little did he know that George would kill him. I think George killed Lennie because he didn't want anyone else too. When the guys found them, they were glad that Lennie was dead. George got up from the ground and went on with the rest of the guys just like a normal day, even though I'm sure he was very sad of losing his best companion. -
Lennie kills Curley's wife
Lennie was sitting in the barn petting his pup, but he was petting it too hard. He accidentally killed it. He burried it under some hay. Then, Curley's wife came into the barn. He didn't want to talk to her, but he finally let in. He told her how he liked soft things, so she let him feel her hair. She told him to stop touching her hair, but he panicked and didn't know what to do, so he kept holding on. She started screaming so he covered her mouth, and then accidentally broke her neck.
