Hard Luck
When Danny agrees to distract Mr. Wiseman the owner of the candy store while the Sullivan brothers steal a couple of licorice pieces little does he know that is all that they plan to still. While Danny is distracting Mr Wiseman the brothers throw a rock through the window of the store and steal the penny jar. Since Danny was at the scene of the crime and wouldn't tell who did it he's the one that gets in trouble for the crime. -
Hard Time and Saying Goodbye
Daniels Garvey Danny's father promise Mr. Wiseman that Danny will work until he pays of the money that was in the stolen penny jar. Then he gives him his family watch as interest that Danny would do the work. After making the deal with Mr. Wiseman on the following day he decides he has to leave in search of work. Then Danny and his family with heavy hearts wish his father a "Goodbye" not knowing how long it would be before they saw him again. -
The Blessing of Hank
Just when Danny's mother is forced to stay in bed and can't attend work due to being pregnant and Danny fails to keep her job and the family loses their source of income. A man named Hank shows up in their apartment one night, looking for his brother who had already been evicted. It turned out that he was a farmer from Oklahoma who lost his wife and land. He played a major role in the Garvey's life by getting a job, helping to support the family,and being a friend for Danny -
Challenging Times
When Danny's mother gives birth to his new baby brother she doesn't do well. Shortly after giving birth she loses large amounts of blood and goes into a coma. Once she goes into the coma Doc Davis informs Danny that there is no way to know how long she could be in the coma but she looks like in this state she won't live long. -
Final Blow
Shortly after leaving his mother's side at the hospital and Danny returns home he searches through his mother's room. He then finds a note stating that his father was run over by a train. He then becomes furious with Hank saying that he didn't tell him. This was the final blow to Danny which nearly destroyed him.
