Desmond Tutu’s parents , Zacheriah Tutu and Aletta Tutu had jobs as an elementary school principal and a cook/janitor at a school for blind people. He had to grow up poor, watching how the blacks were discriminated and didnt have most of the rights that white people had.

He studied with a scholarship at Pretoria Bantu Normal College. His plan was to be a doctor. Desmond was accepted into medical school. However, he could not attend due to his parents’ poorness.

Throughout these two years, all of of Tutu’s hard work payed off causing him to get elected for first black Anglican bishop and archbishop

Over the years , Tutu had been collecting more and lore awards for all of his accomplishments, such as the President Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. He had been suffering from health issues but still seems to be living.

Desmond Tutu is a religious leader in South Africa. His protests helped to bring an end to South Africa’s apartheid laws. Apartheid was a system that kept blacks separate from whites. In 1984 Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
