Nathaniel Bacon is born in Suffolk, England. He was the only son and one of several children of Thomas Bacon and Elizabeth Brooke Bacon. His mother died soon after his birth. -
Receives M.B. from Cambridge
His father pulled him out of Cambridge earlier due to inattention to his studies. Bacon studied with a tutor and toured North America. Then, he finally gets his M.B. and graduates after a break in his studies. -
Marries Elizabeth Duke
Nathaniel Bacon marries Elizabeth Duke. She goes through with the marriage even though her father disapproves. The couple will end up having two daughters. -
Leaves For Virginia
Nathaniel Bacon leaves England. It is not known if he takes his two daughters with him. He heads to Virginia because a fraud scheme is attatched to him. He takes his wife, Elizabeth with him. -
Becomes Member of the Council of State
After trading, Nathaniel Bacon established himself in Virginia. Bacon is appointed a member of the Virginia Council of State. He was appointed by Sir William Berkeley, Governor of Virginia. He is one of several new members. -
Seizes Native Americans
As a militiamen leader, Bacon seizes a nice group of Appamattuck Indians. He does this because he thought that they stole corn. Governor Berkeley strongly disapproves and says his actions were "rash". -
Expelled from the Council
He is expelled from the Virginia Council of State after controversial behavior. Governor Berkeley doesn't support his fighting and aggressive actions against Natives. He is also named a rebel by the Governor. -
Gathers in Jamestown to Rebel
Nathaniel Bacon arrives in Jamestown, Virginia. He gathers with the House of Burgesses and a fellow rebel named James Crewes. He works together with them to plan a rebellion against the government. -
Bacon is Seized
Bacon is seized by the government after being accompanied by several other armed men. He apologizes for his rebellion in hope for sympathy, even going on one knee. Berkeley and the General Assembly decide to let him go. -
Bacon Demands Support
Nathaniel Bacon returns to Jamestown with 500 men. He makes a demand to Berkeley. He demands Berkeley to let him act as general against the Native Americans. There is a standoff, but Governor Berkeley lets Bacon have his way. He would later change his mind. -
Bacon Issues Declaration of Greivances
This is the first of a series of declarations of grievances. The declarations are against Governor William Berkeley. They are complaints and justifications of his rebellious actions. -
During Rebellion, Bacon Dies
Nathaniel Bacon is in the midst of leading a rebellion against the governor of Virginia. He unexpectedly dies of dysentery at the house of Thomas Pate. Joseph Ingram takes command of the rebel troops.
