My Reading Book: The Phantom Tollbooth

  • Beginning: Milo

    Beginning: Milo
In the beginning, the author introduces the main character, Milo. Milo is a normal boy who is very bored and uninterested in everything. He doesn't care to pay much attention or learn anything.
  • Tollbooth

    Tollbooth
The tollbooth isn't actually a character, but I like to think of it as one because of the way it 'magically' appeared as if it has a mind of its own. We don't know who sent it, but Milo decided he will take the trip through it.
  • Expectations

    Expectations
The first character that Milo meets is the weatherman, or rather, the Whether Man! This confusing encounter sets the tone that this trip will be one like no other that Milo has gone on before.
  • Lethargians of the Doldrums

    Lethargians of the Doldrums
The Lethargians are lazy little creatures who don't think because it is against the law. They try to keep Milo from going forward with his journey and for a moment he agrees that not thinking sounds pretty good. Really they are holding him hostage.
  • TOCK

    TOCK
Tock is a dog with a big watch on him that goes tick, tick, tick. Unfortunately he was named Tock even though his brother (who tock, tock, tocks) is named Tick. Tock is a watchdog and becomes Milo's friend and companion. Tock helps Milo out of the Doldrums by encouraging him to think.
  • Royal Cabinet at Dictionopolis

    Royal Cabinet at Dictionopolis
Five royal advisors that work for the king of Dictionopolis who all talk in synonyms. They take things literally, like actually falling off a log.
  • Spelling Bee

    Spelling Bee
A very large bee that talks, and spells. It doesn't much care for the Humbug.
  • Humbug

    Humbug
The Humbug is an odd character that dislikes confrontation. He agrees with everyone all the time and thinks he is the smartest person on every topic. He is actually not very smart.
