Jacob gets a call while he is at work, telling him that he must go to his grandfathers house, who is having issues with his old age. He goes to his house, only to find it trashed, and his grandfather no where to be found. He goes out into the woods, where he finds his grandfather lying on the ground, with slashes in his stomach. He sits with his grandfather while he dies, and tells him his last words, which are about the peculiar tales he told Jacob when he was young.

Jacob has been struggling with the circumstances of his grandfathers death, especially because of his strange last words. His therapist feels that visiting the island where his grandfather grew up will be good for his mental recovery. Jacob hopes to find any people who live there and might remember his grandfather.

Jacob treks through the woods to the old orphanage that his grandfather grew up in, and when he sees some children while in the basement, he chases them back into the woods, and they lead him into a tomb, which he goes into and when he comes out he is in the time of September third 1944

There is a suspicious character in modern wales. Somebody has slaughtered an entire herd of sheep, and a citizen of the town has been murdered. The townspeople are looking for a scapegoat, and many suspect Jacob, but he knows he is innocent, and believes the culprit is the mysterious bird watcher who has been bothering his father.
