Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott had lived in a free state as an African American. When he was moving back to Missouri, a slave state, he appealed in front of the court for his freedom. Roger Taney said that because Scott was black that he would never be a US citizen. His case brought slavery to the nation's attention. -
Lincoln Assassination
While Lincoln was watching a comedy with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, he was shot from behind by John Wilkes Booth. The bullet had entered through his left ear and was lodged behind his right eye. -
McCarthy Hearings
McCarthy and his staff began investigating the Army for Communist infiltration. The Army accused McCarthy of seeking special treatment for a friend of his in the Army. -
Brown v. BOE
Brown v Board of Education Nationa Historic SiteSegregation in schools was challenged in Kansas. It was the 12th case filed. The schools ended up winning and are now historic sites. They are Monroe Elementary and Sumner Elementary. -
Gideon v. Wainwright
Clarance Gideon was too poor to afford an attorney, and in return spent 5 years in prison. He petitioned that it was unconstitutional to not have a lawyer during trial. The supreme court ruled in his favor, and now "the right to an attorney" is stated in the Miranda Rights. -
Medicare
Created to provide health insurance to adults over age 65. It later expanded to younger adults with disability. Each working American citizen helps pay for Medicare by it being deducted out of our paychecks. -
Watergate Affair
Burglars were arresting in the office of the Democratic National Committee. The people caught worked for Nixon's re-election committee and they were trying to tap phones and steal documents. -
Cilnton Impeachment
Clinton began his affair with Monica Lewinsky in November of 1995. She was an unpaid intern of his. The affair was uncovered when Lewinsky transferred to the Pentagon and revealed her story to Linda Tripp, who would secretly record their conversations. He was only the second president in history to be impeached. -
09/11/2001
19 members of Al-Qaeda overtook American flights and were targeting for New York and Washington D.C. Two planes crashed into both of the Twin Towers, the third into the Pentagon, and the fourth in Shanksville, PA after passengers tried to overtake the terrorists. -
