  • Louis XIV marries Maria Theresa of Spain

    This strengthened his rule because Maria was a member of the House of Hapsburg, perhaps one of the most powerful families to ever live. He then had an alliance with Spain and Austria. This event relates to the social aspect of GASPIRE because he is forming an alliance with the hosue of Hapsburg.

    Louis technically came of official age seven years prior, but he had a prime minister that had a great deal of power before. His prime minister, Mazarin, died in 1661, and Louis proclaimed he would rule without a prime minister, his first step towards a absolute government. This event relates to the governmental aspect of GASPIRE because he is gaining power over the government.
  • Louis XIV tries to expand French land

    He attacked boardering Spanish towns and parts of the Spanish Netherlands. He tried to attack the Dutch Netherlands but failed, though he did gain a few towns. This would be both a victory and a loss to his people. They lost soldiers, but they also gained quite a bit of land. This event relates the the geographical aspect of GASPIRE becasue he gained a few towns of land.

    Louis XIV made art very popular, especially opera and ballet. Under Louis, the main purpose of art wasnot to soley paint Biblical people and events. He believed that the purpose of art was to paint the king quite literally in a better light to help with his ruling. This is a strength for the people because they could enjoy more arts. This event relates to the art aspect of GASPIRE becasue he is helping cultivate the Renissaunce.

    Louis slows down the economic process of France. He cancels the Edict of Nantes, which protected religious rights of Huguenots. This is a loss for many of the people because they had to leave the country becasue Louis the XIV didn't like their religion. This releates to the religious aspect of GASPIRE becasue he is esssentially throwing out a bunch of people becasue he didn't like their religions.

    A war that lasted nearly until the end of Louis' reign and life. Several European nations fought against France to keep them from controlling both France and Spain, due to the fact that Louis' wife was the daughter of the Maria Theresa, was the daughter of the late Spanish king. This war was devetating for France, it cost them a great deal of their colonies and wealth, as well as thousands of lives. This event relates to the geographical aspect of GASPIRE because there was a gret loss of land.
