  • Birth & Early Life

    Lin-Manuel Miranda was born on January 16, 1980, in New York City. He is of Puerto Rican descent and was raised in a Hispanic neighborhood which heavily contributed to his love for music and dance.
  • Early Musicals

    When Lin-Manuel Miranda was growing up, he constantly showed his love for music and dance by joining musicals and plays during school. In sixth grade, he joined a musical called "Conrad Birdie."
  • Education

    Lin-Manuel Miranda attended Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. He then went to Wesleyan University, where he continued to perform in musicals and to write his own songs & shows. It was there when he began to compose the first draft of "In The Heights."
  • English teacher

    Before Miranda started actually to do his plays and act in groups, he took a chance to be an English teacher for a year at the school he went to, Hunter College High School. He
    later on went to SNL to do a substitute teacher skit.
  • Freestyle Love Supreme

    In 2003, Miranda co-founded a group called "Freestyle Love Supreme," a hip-hop improv musical group that would rap and beatbox while being backed up by keyboards. They would also engage their audience in their musicals by bringing them on stage or asking for suggestions. "Freestyle Love Supreme" eventually went on Broadway in 2019 and has been going on for 16 years.
  • IN THE HEIGHTS

    In the Heights was a book written originally by Quiara Alegría Hudes but was written and turned into a play by Miranda. The play follows a neighborhood of people set around Manhattan who sing and dream of a better life. It ended up getting on Broadway and winning four Tony awards including Best Musical.
  • White House Poetry

    In 2009, Miranda was invited to perform at the White House Poetry Jam in front of President Barack and Michelle Obama. He debuted the song that would eventually be the opening number to "Hamilton." Miranda told the crowd what he planned on doing with "Hamilton," and everyone laughed, but by the end of his performance, everyone was on their feet, including the Obamas!
  • His Wife

    Miranda and Vanessa Nadal met during high-school but they never really spoke until he found her on facebook later on in 2005 and invited Vanessa to a improv troupe he was in called Freestyle Love Supreme. It was then when they clicked and he proposed to her in a photobooth. They tied the knot in 2010, where he surprisingly performed a song called "My Life" from The "Fiddler On The Roof".

    "Bring It On: The Musical" is a musical with music and lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Kitt, and Amanda Green. It is heavily based on the film "Bring It On" and tells the story of Campbell Davis, a young cheerleader who dreams of leading her team to victory at a National competition.

    In 2012, Miranda made an appearance in the film, "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" playing a town botanist named Reggie trying to figure out what is wrong with a boy named Timothy and why he is growing leaves out of his legs.

    In 2014, Miranda published a 14-minute musical called "21 Chump Street" about a girl named Naomi, an undercover cop, who goes to a school in Florida to find drug dealers. It discusses the consequences of peer pressure, conformity, and drug use in our schools. It was also based on a real-life story.
  • First Born Son

    In November 2014, Miranda and Vanessa welcomed their son Sebastian, named after Sebastian the crab in The Little Mermaid, into the world!
  • HAMILTON

    Hamilton is a musical play written, sung, and rapped by Miranda in 2015 about Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of America, and his rise to fight for honor, love, and a legacy that would shape our nation. The play went on to earn a record-breaking 16 nominations and winning 11 awards.
  • ORLANDO TRIBUTE SONG

    In 2016, Lin-Manuel teamed up with Jennifer Lopez to make a tribute song called “Love Make the World Go Round” for those who died in the Orlando shooting in 2015. It honored and celebrated them, to support love in the face of hate.
  • MOANA

    Lin-Manuel Miranda contributed music, vocals, and lyrics to the movie Moana. One of the main songs, "How Far I'll Go", was nominated for the Best Song Written For Visual Media in in the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2016.
  • HURRICANE IN PUERTO RICO

    In 2017, Miranda contributed support to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, a category five storm, left 3,000 dead and damaged about 80 percent of their systems. In less than a week, he released a song that referenced lyrics to all 78 towns in Puerto Rico and featured several well-known Latin artists including Camilla Cabello, Rita Moreno, and Gina Rodriguez. It ended up racking up 500,000 views and all the money was funded to everyone in need
  • Second Born Son

    In 2018, Miranda and Vanessa welcomed their second son Francisco Miranda into their lives. Miranda states that he passed down his love for music to both of their sons!
  • "Tick, Tick... Boom!" !

    "Tick, Tick... Boom!" is a biographical musical based on Jonathon Larson, the original creator of the musical. It tells the story of an aspiring composer named Jon, who is having a career crisis. In 2021, Lin-Manuel directed and produced "Tick, Tick... Boom!" into a film that was nominated for 111 awards and turned to win 37 of them. It also cast many known actors like Andrew Garfield and Vanessa Hudgens.
