Stalin Starves the Ukrainians
Stalin takes farms forcefully from the people of Russia. He proposes that they should join a state owned factory-like collection of farms. When they refuse, he intentionally starves 10 million of them. One third of those starved to death are children. He also exports enough grain that would have fed all of them. This is also known as Holomodor, or "death by forced hunger" in Ukrainian. -
The Great Terror Begins
The events known as the Great Terror begin with the assassination of Sergei Kirov. Kirov was a potential political rival of Joseph Stalin, so he was assassinated. Stalin used this act to scare people that would stand up to the Communist party. -
Stalin's Death
On March 5, 1953, Stalin dies after being gravely ill for some time. This ends his almost three decade reign of terror. Dispite the terrible acts he had committed, the people of the Soviet Union were still sad to hear of his death.
