Jose Joaquin De Arredondo

  • Birth

    Jose Joaquin de Arredondo was born to father Nicolas de Arredondo y Palegri and mother Josefa Roso de Miono. Was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1768.
  • Entered Royal Spanish Guard

    He entered the Royal Spanish Guards as a cadet in 1787 at the age of 19.
  • Promoted

    He was promoted to colonel in 1810 at the age of 42.
  • Suppressing a Revolt

    He was instrumental in suppressing Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla's revolt and criollo in 1811. This revolt was related to the revolts in that province in 1812 and 1813.
  • Commandant

    He was rewarded for ending the revolt by being promoted to commandant of the eastern division of the Provincias Internas in 1813. He was 45 years old.
  • Leaving for San Antonio

    Reinforced with new troops, he left for San Antonio and on August 18, 1813, Defeated the rebels under Jose Alvarez de Toledo y Dubois in the battle of Medina.
  • Crushed the Expedition

    After returning to Monterrey, he crushed the expedition of Francisco Xavier Mina by overrunning his defenses at the village of Soto la Marina in October of 1817. He was 47 years old.
  • Bringing Settlers to Texas

    Near the end of his tenture as commandant, he approved the potition of Moses Austin to bring settlers into Texas.
  • Swore Allegiance to Mexican Nation

    At Monterrey he endorsed the plan of Iguala and swore alligence to a new Mexican Nation.
  • Death

    He surrendered his command and retired to Havana, where he died in 1837 at the age of 69.
