He was borrn in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was then brought to Russia where he was educated in St. Petersburg. -

After the death of his father, Whistler left America. He moved in with his sister and her husband but eventually he moved back. -

The date isn't exact but due to his failing a chemistry class, James was dismissed from school to follow his passion for art. This is also around the time when he left for Paris. -
Whistler Arrives in Paris
He began studying at the école Imperial et Spéciale de Dessin (the "petite école"). Although what he learned helped him, he decided to make pieces inspired by artists the he didn't learn about in class. -
Whistler settles in London.
James moved away from his French friends and came to England. His paintings were influenced by Pre-Raphealites( a group of artists wantig to start a new art movement) and Japanese artists. -
Whistler paints Symphony in White, NO. 1
This is one of Whistler's most famous pieces. This piece was oil on canvas and it also happens to be the piece that brought him international fame. -
Arrangement in Grey and Black
Also known as "Whistler's Mother", this piece was one of his most known artworks. Around this time in Whistler's life, he was really inspired by music. Therefore he would name his paintings using words such as symphony, arrangement, and nocturnes. -
The Society of British Artists
James was elected as president of this organization but was voted off within two years. Some members weren't fond of him due to his revolutionary ideas. -
Marriage
Whistler married Beatrix Godwin, whom was a widow of his old friend, E.W. Godwin. E.W. and James had collaborated before his death. -
Whistler dies.
He died at sixty-nine years old in his home. It was known that he was ill for some time by his friends and family.
