A JEWISH BIRTH
Born on November 9, 1922, in Debrecen, Hungary to Jewish parents named Jacob Marton Lipsitz and Margit Herczfeld. His full name is Imre Avrum Lipschitz, which is very important for this timeline. -
SCHOOL AND COMMUNISM
In 1944 Imre graduated from the University of Debrecen, with a degree in mathematics, physics, and philosophy. During that time he was a communist who held is own illegal communist study group. -
WAR CHANGES EVERYTHING
Nazi Germany invaded Hungary in March 1944. Remember Imre and his family are Jewish. His mother and grandmother were forced and killed at Auschwitz. The Nazis killed 550,000 Jewish-Hungarians. During the constant unrest, Imre was able to escape to Nagvaryad,Romania under the name Molnar. -
Im a Stalinist
After the war in 1947, Imre changed is name again to Imre Lakatos for obvious reasons and moved back to Hungary. His Stalinist views rubbed the Hungarian communist party the wrong way and he was imprisoned from 1950 to 1953 on charges of revisionism. -
EDUCATION CHANGED MY VIEWS AND LIFE
With more education and the works of Popper influencing him, Imre Lakatos changed his mind and left the views of Stalinist Marxism. -
NOTABLE WORK PT.1
Most of his work came to fruition while living in Britain. Lakatos contributed the Methodology of Scientific research programmes which is a notable contribution to philosophy. Lakatos's theory was meant to revise and combine Popper's and Kuhn's work. He thought research can be conducted on the basis of "first principles". He see's "science as a community of practitioners developing research programmes that are launched and worked on despite apparent falsification". -
NOTABLE WORK PT.2
Lakatos Philosophy of Mathematics brought forth the Proofs and Refutations. Lakatos's point is "that the development of mathematics is much more like the development of science as portrayed by Popper than is commonly supposed, and indeed much more like the development of science as portrayed by Popper than Popper himself supposed". -
A MAN WITH NO HOME
Imre Lakatos died of a heart attack on February 2, 1974. Not only did he die early in life he also wasn't able to become naturalized in Britain because of his past and the British didn't trust him. Even after all of his contributions. -
