    Diderot published The Encyclopedia

    This was the most important work of his lifetime. It was also the most sold book. He was on of the leaders of the enlightenment period. This period mainly was about humans striving for higher levels of thinking and reason.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    It is known as the Seven Years War. It was fought by British colonies and France. The name comes from the fact that American Indians allied heavily in the war. The Treaty of Paris formally ended the war.
  • Pontiac's Rebellion

    Pontiac's Rebellion
    The rebellion began. Indians led by Pontiac attack British forces. Pontiac signed a treaty with the British in 1766. In 1769, he was murdered by a Peoria Indian while visiting Illinois

    Voiltaire Writes Treaties on Toleration
    It basically covers Voltaire's beliefs again. It discusses his usual topic. These topics being freedom of religion, freedom of speech and thought. His stories always describe those main things. This is why he is one of the most influential enlightenment writers of his time.

    Voltaire: L'Ingénu
    Voltaire published L'Ingénu. This book describes his views on many things during this time period. It made fun of the ridiculousness of people at the time. The book speaks about religion, freedom of expression, and much more.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre took place. It wasn't really a massacre. It was between a Patriot mob and British soldiers. Colonist were killed. This is a major event leading to Revolutionary war.
  • Treaty of Alliance

    Treaty of Alliance
    Treaty of alliance between France and United States was signed. It created a military alliance. This alliance was against Great Britain. Benjamin Franklin took part in negotiating it. It required that France or the United States agree to a separate peace with Great Britain.

    Confessions
    Rousseau publishes Confessions. It is an autobiography. He told of his life including many personal stories. You get to see him in a different light. He speaks from a wide range of topics from traveling to women.
  • Bastille Day

    Bastille Day
    Revolutionaries break into the Bastille. This is a statement declaring their complete hatred for the monarchy. The mob also took weapons and gunpowder that were kept in the prison. The people released prisoners out as well. This day is known as Bastille Day.

    The Declaration of the Rights of Man
    The Declaration of the Rights of Man is written. It stated that all men are equal under law. The French Revolution was about liberties, equality and fraternity. Although this was the case, it back fired in some way. Women and Children weren't mentioned in this document.

    Olympe de Gouges published a Declaration of the Rights of Woman. The Declaration of Rights of Man did not mention women. It was quite a step up for women. This goes along with enlightenment thinking. Of course, this discusses the liberties and rights of women in this time since the were not discussed in the Declaration of Rights of Man.

    Thomas Paine's Rights of Man
    Thomas Paine's Rights of Man was written. This was written when he participated in the revolution as a member of the French National Assembly. It tells of his beliefs and his values. He wants to draw between the old governments and the new between post-revolution America and France.

    Reign of Terror (September 1793- July 1794)

    Many of people( approximately 15,000) are sentenced to death by execution because of conflict between two political parties. These parties were the Jacobins and the Girondins. The leader of the Jacobins was Maximilien. He would soon rise to power.
  • Maximilien Robespierre Killed

    Maximilien Robespierre Killed
    Maximilien Robespierre is executed. The Jacobins lose their power as well. The Girondins gain more power because of this. Maximilien was the leader of the Committee of a Public Safety. The Convention began to blame him for the Reign of Terror which is why he was later executed.

    Treaty of Amiens

    Treaty of Amiens was signed with the British. The treaty was a pact. The British and French forces agreed not to fight. Since Austria was defeated and many other wars were ended, Europe was at peace. This happened for the first time in 10 years!

    Napoleon becomes Emperor
    Napoleon becomes Emperor. He placed his on crown on his head. Napoleon was a great warrior and military leader. He led his people to glory, but his eagerness for power got in the way. It led to his devastating fall.
