immigration timeline

  • He was born

In 1994 JN was born in Myanmar, specifically Rhakine state of Myanmar. His parents had already lived more than 50 years there before he was born. JN only had temporary residence while he lived in Myanmar, and was often discriminated against at school/bullied. He was often called names for example "Kalar" which meant illegal immigrant in Rakhine.
  • Anti Rohingya violence erupted

In Myanmar, the Myanmar military government continues to deny that JN's family/people are ethnic Rohingya. They refuse to believe it, implying that they are illegal immigrants that have arrived from their neighbouring country, Bangladesh. The anti-violence erupted all over the country which led to young kids that were "educated" being dragged out of their homes because they were a " threat to authority." JN had to leave his home, and find somewhere to hide for his own safety.
  • fled the country

JN ended up fleeing the country for his own safety, moving to multiple places. Including, China, Thailand, and India, but in every place, JN had the big risk of getting arrested. If he were found guilty of entering the country illegally, he would be detained, arrested and sent back to his home country. After moving to those three places, he also went to Malaysia and Indonesia. He also went to Australia. After arriving in Australia, he was quickly arrested and sent back to Indonesia.
  • Refugee/Refugee protests

He stayed in Indonesia, locked up. He lived in Indonesia as a refugee coming from Myanmar, and always stood up and protested against refugee rights as well as the treatment of refugees. Not only that, he protested how badly he was treated as a Refugee after arriving in Australia, how they use one group of people as an example for others as well as how refugees in Indonesia have indirectly been detained by Australia.
  • Application approved

In 2020, JN's application for moving to Canada was finally approved. He had been waiting all his life to gain freedom and be in a safe environment. After waiting so many years, living in fright of being arrested, or being taken to his home, he could finally finish his studies, get a job and access healthcare. He stated that he welled up in tears when he heard the news about the approval of his application as a refugee to Canada.
  • Moved to Canada

In September of 2021, JN finally moved to Toronto. He got a question asked about whether he had family in Canada, and he stated that he had five people who sponsored him which he felt like were family. He was extremely excited to finally have the freedom to finish his studies and get a real job where he wouldn't be discriminated against. Not only this but he also finally made his own bank account because you weren't allowed to do that in Myanmar. He stated he felt very "special."
  • Recieved permanent residence card

In April of 2022, JN finally received his permanent residence card for Canada. He was the happiest person on earth, no longer called a Refugee. He was finally free from anything not needed to be scared or frightened that he would be arrested or taken away. He is now living in Toronto. He states that he wishes the nearly one million Rohingya refugees who are in Limbo just like him, and wishing his family the best which he left back in Myanmar.
